Jack grinned when he saw Sam. He'd been wandering the campsite looking for her, one of the drawbacks of planlessness being that it made it more difficult to find the person you were taking out.
He dropped to sit on the grass beside her. "Afternoon, Sam," he said, still grinning. "You seem to be embracing planlessness very nicely."
Jack shifted until he was sitting between her and the sun and looked down at her. "A fraud. How so? I see you lazing in the sun, I see you reading," he peered at the cover of her book, "okay, not pirate ninja sex, but still, something you enjoy. I sense no planning here."
"What is it with the pirate ninja sex?" Sam asked, "and the plan part comes in where I knew I'd be running into you at some point, so I couldn't do something that would get me all greasy."
Jack's grin widened, and he reached out a hand to touch the back of her neck. "No, you're not greasy. Though if you were, I'm sure I could think of something to accomodate it," he said slowly. "And I've been asked to go through the pirate ninja book and mark what is and isn't possible, so I might be able to tell you why it's so popular once I'm done."
"Motorcycle," she said, throat a little dry, "and you're proofreading an already published book to explain the sex scenes?" Sam may have stared at him. "It's nice that you're putting your...expertise to good use?"
"I'm a generous guy," he said seriously. "And there were some questions raised about the feasability of sex in a hammock." He leaned back on his elbows, smiling innocently. "You have a motorcycle?"
"Ah. Hammocks can be tricky, yeah." Sam said, thinking of the time she'd climbed into one and promptly dumped herself out onto the ground. "I'm rebuilding it right now, but yeah. Hopefully eventually."
"Especially when there's more than two people involved," he said with a small laugh. "But I'm discovering that you're a woman of many talents. Wormhole equations, rebuilding motorcycles, flying. Is there anything you're not interested in?"
Jack smiled modestly. "Well, I'm not one to brag," he said, smile spreading across his face. "As for interests - you could teach me something? Not wormhole equations, though."
Jack leaned back, giving this some serious thought. "Well," he said slowly. "This place gets invaded on a semi-regular basis, right?" He glanced down at her, eyes uncertain. "Know anything about self-defence? Cause I think I need to learn some, and I don't remember if I ever did."
Jack laughed softly. "I guess that's a definite yes. And I don't know? I might have to place myself entirely in your capable hands. I just..."
Asking for help wasn't the easiest thing in the world for him, and he raked a hand through his hair and sighed. "I don't want to have to rely on other people to protect me. And I don't want to ever be in a situation where I can't protect the people I care about. Not that they couldn't wipe the floor with me," he added with a laugh, imagining Parker's likely reaction to anyone trying to protect her.
"I'll take good care of you, Jack, I promise," she said, trying to reassure him, and understanding how Jack losing his memory may have made him feel especially vulnerable. "I understand exactly what you mean. I'll do what I can to help you. And you might already have some experience--we'll see, okay?"
He dropped to sit on the grass beside her. "Afternoon, Sam," he said, still grinning. "You seem to be embracing planlessness very nicely."
