Seahorse Cabin, Sunday Morning/Afternoon

May 28, 2006 14:21

Sam stretched out on the grass, reading. Occasionally she sipped from a bottle of water. She was immensely botherable.

Jaye's bored and it's nice out. Therefore, she comes outside and unceremoniously plops herself down on the grass.

"Hey."

"Hey. How's the toaster?" It has occurred to Sam that she may never have a normal conversation with Jaye again.

"Haven't heard much out of it since it broke Jack's heart," she replies. "It might be rethinking its decision."

"Wouldn't you, if you broke Jack's heart?"

"I think I'd be boggling more about how I managed it," Jaye answers, thinking about it. "Somehow I think Jack'll survive. Not so sure about the toaster."

"I think his heart's fragile, just like anyone's," Sam shrugged a shoulder. "And I had no idea your toaster was so high maintenance."

"Yeah, the toaster came as a shock to me, too," she says. "And I'm not saying Jack's heartless or anything. Far from it. It's just... beck and calling for fun and all that? I just can't think of a point where actual heartbreak comes in there, if that makes any sense? And it's totally not a slam."

"It's what he knows," Sam said, playing a little with the cover of the book she'd been reading. "And I know it's not a slam--at least he's honest about what he wants, right? So you know what you're getting into."

"Exactly," she says. "Guys usually suck about that kind of thing. It's 'okay, we're cute together, let's see where this goes' and then as soon as it goes somewhere, everything changes. So yeah. Knowing where you stand from the get-go? Huge plus."

"Do you think we're too young to be this bitter?" Sam wondered.

"Probably," she nods, and flops back onto the grass so she can look up.

"So, any plans for today?" Yes, she's sworn off making plans, but that doesn't mean she can't plan vicariously through other people.

"Not really," she shrugs, not that it's obvious in her current position. "Alec and I were talking about Caritas sometime this weekend, but I don't know if that's today, and tomorrow's girlkissy-in-exchange-for-boykissy, so... not sure. Maybe just lazing around."

She pauses. "Maybe I'll move sometime today. Haven't decided. You?"

"You and Alec huh? Cool." She plucked at a blade of grass, then turned her head to stare at Jaye. "And I'm sorry, girlkissy in exchange for what?"

"I'm, uh, going out for coffee or pastry or something with Jack later, I think."

"He and I worked out a deal. Girlkissy in exchange for boykissy. Rory's down for it, so we're thinking tomorrow," she says.

She picks her head up a little to look at Sam and asks, "Date or not-date?"

"Huh," Sam said. "And not sure. Is there such a thing as not-date with potential?"
