Third Floor Common Room, Wednesday Afternoon

Jan 28, 2015 16:33

After nearly five minutes of fiddling with the input settings on the remote control, Amy was willing to admit (to herself and only to herself) that maybe she didn't know how to change the channel on the TV. It was a frustrating realization to come to, since she generally considered herself a competent person, but there it was. The TV refused to ( Read more... )

"Didn't take you for a jock," Ronan said after strolling in, Chainsaw perched on his shoulder. She didn't seem to care at all about what was on the television.

"I'm not," Amy said with just a note of defensiveness in her tone, but that had less to do with Ronan and more to do with her own frustration with not being able to figure out a stupid remote. (Little did she know that the TV just hated people.) "I mean, not usually. I just figured now's as good a time as any to learn what the free throw line is."

She sounded dubious. Was there such a thing as a free throw line? Which line was it?

"How are you doing?" she asked, shifting over the couch to make room. "What up, Chainsaw."

Chainsaw, always happy to get some attention, jumped from Ronan's shoulder onto the couch where she pecked at the soft cushions. She was probably disappointed that she couldn't eat anything.

Ronan took a seat a few moments later and slouched down. His response to her question was a one shouldered shrug and a sigh. He was how he always was. "What's the occasion for trying to learn this crap?"

Amy shrugged. "Nothing special," she said. "There's been a lot of Super Bowl talk going on this week, and my friend from back home just started dating some kind of wrestler." MMA fighter, but close enough. "I guess I might as well at least learn how one sport works."

Also, she was stubborn and the TV was a jerk.

"Hey, what about you? You seem sporty. Any chance you know basketball words?"

"I seem sporty?" Ronan made a face and crossed his arms, trying not to take offense at that stereotype (it was pretty easy considering it wasn't that offensive). Sports? Ugh. "Unless drag racing counts, I'm not really all that sporty. I know they throw a ball around and sweat all over each other."

"Hey, I thought you were supposed to be Mr. Popular," Amy pointed out lightly. "Isn't sports supposed to be the key to that at normal schools?"

Her knowledge of normal schools was pretty limited, she was willing to admit.

"Do I look like a team player?" The thought of trying to get along with a group of people, trying to take orders, even for sports plays, just made him want to laugh.

"...Good point." No, she wasn't going to try to refute that to spare his feelings. "I probably couldn't be an athlete either, I'd just get angry whenever people ran plays I didn't agree with and wind up accidentally sabotaging my own team."

Ronan gave that some thought before he actually nodded. "See, that'd be fun. Joining a team just to piss them off and make them lose? Right up my alley. It'd be fun to see them cry into their linen shirts."

"And you could get the team's supporters all worked up over nothing," Amy said thoughtfully. "I bet people would yell at you from the stands and stuff and you could just keep doing your thing."

"And that would be delightful," he sighed, reaching down and petting Chainsaw with one long finger. "But, I'd rather stay away from all that organized bullshit, if I can. I don't want to bond or connect with anyone like that."

"Agreed," Amy said. "Good thing this school doesn't have required gym, I guess. Or room for a basketball court without a set of stairs in the middle."

"No, this place just has classes on clothes and talking horses," he said, rolling his eyes at that. "Feels like I'm on a constant acid trip whenever I wake up."

If he slept, that was.
