Ronan missed his car. It used to be so easy to stomp his way out of Monmouth and get into the BMW and take off. He could find a drag race somewhere outside of town and take the money of every single child that showed up and then come back with Gansey none the wiser ( Read more... )

Jalian really was trying to get out more. It had occurred to her that even if she did try to get back to her timeline, experience in this one couldn't hurt.

So, she was wandering the dorms. She poked her head into the common room, saw people, and nodded. "Hello."

"Hello," Ronan returned. Chainsaw squawked a hello of her own and flapped her wings. She was friendlier than he was. "Busy place."

Jalian shrugged. "All students live here." She gave the bird a slightly interested glance. Then remembered she was trying to be friendly, even to males.

"If you don't like it, the forest is emptier." That was totally friendly, right?

Ronan tilted his head. Chainsaw squawked and flew herself up to Ronan's shoulder, pecking at his shirt.

"Presumptuous," Ronan noted. "Who said I didn't like it? Not me."

"You didn't sound pleased," Jalian noted, and shrugged again, then went to look for coffee.

Ronan never sounded pleased. Unless he was drunk.

"Why would I go to the forest anyway?" he asked after letting silence reign for a few moments. "I don't want to go commune with nature."

It wasn't Cabeswater.

Jalian frowned at his phrasing, slightly puzzled by it, then ignored it. "To be alone. Or to climb trees or run. Or to let your bird fly, maybe."

Ronan made a quiet sound at her explanation but didn't immediately comment. That was mostly down to getting Chainsaw off his shoulder and into his hands so he could rub underneath her beak.

"Forest seems like a cold place to do that sort of thing," he finally said, not sounding like he cared all that much. "I can be alone in the can. I can climb trees in my dreams -- "

He hadn't tried that yet in his dreams. Hmm.

" -- and Chainsaw flies whenever she wants to fly."

Hey, you'd actually earned a bit of approval. If you cared. "Good. Birds need to fly. Does she hunt?"

"If she wants to," Ronan said, shrugging. Truth be told, he wasn't sure he'd never seen Chainsaw hunt. She just kind of hung around on Ronan's shoulder or in his room. "But, she's lazy sometimes and just makes me feed her."

Like now.

"Ken Selvren huntresses have hunting birds. They're useful sometimes. And the males train some to guard the fields from other birds. Ravens are smart."

"They are," he agreed with a nod. "Ken Selvren? What the hell's that?"

"Clan Silver-eyes," Jalian translated, pointing at her eyes in case he'd somehow missed them.

He hadn't but he'd just guessed contact lenses or something. "One of those weird, strange, things you don't see every day that people have been telling me about, right? I don't remember hearing about any clans in the United States."

"Not yet." Jalian shrugged. "Maybe not ever in this timeline, since Armageddon hasn't happened yet. I tried to jump back along my own timeline, but this place affected the neg-entropy line I was on somehow, and I ended up here."
