Ronan missed his car. It used to be so easy to stomp his way out of Monmouth and get into the BMW and take off. He could find a drag race somewhere outside of town and take the money of every single child that showed up and then come back with Gansey none the wiser ( Read more... )

After her entire two classes (seriously, since when did that count as a full day of high school?), Amy was ready for some of the free food Mara had told her about.

"Hi, do you mind if I-- bird."

There was a bird in that guy's shoulder. Did that guy know there was a bird on his shoulder?

Chainsaw flapped her wings at the newcomer and squawked loudly a few times. Food was forgotten for the moment, apparently.

Ronan glanced back over his shoulder. "Superb observation, there. Mensa must be knocking down your door."

"Actually, they already offered me membership for knowing better than to hang out with wild birds," Amy quipped back. Well, it was sort of a quip. "Or is that your pet?"

"Say that any louder, she might try and peck you."

So yes, she was a pet. She was just a picky, peculiar pet.

"She's tame. And clean. You won't get whatever latest exotic disease is in the news from her."

"Good to know," Amy said, though she was going to eye Chainsaw suspiciously anyway. It wasn't every day she saw a raven indoors. Or anywhere, in any setting.

As she inched toward the kitchen facilities, she said, "I'm Amy. I guess cats and dogs are out of style where you come from?"

"They're boring," he said bluntly. He picked up some bread and held it out for Chainsaw who took it with a quick snap of her beak. "I don't want something that cuddles and makes a lot of noise."

Chainsaw squawked as if to prove she was plenty noisy. Ronan gave her a look.

"I'm not from any weird planet or dimension or anything else this place says is normal. I'm from Virginia."

"I'm from Texas," Amy offered as she opened a cabinet. "2015, since that's apparently something I need to specify."

Weird.

"So are you new too?"

"Unfortunately," he answered, shaking his head. "New and shiny isn't my favorite thing to be. Chainsaw's fine with it, though. Means she gets attention."

Chainsaw squawked before Ronan rolled his eyes at her and gave her some more bread.

"Texas? Long way from home."

"Yeah," Amy agreed, "I decided what I really needed this winter was to be freezing and cramped in a building full of my peers."

It was a fairly crazy idea, now that she really thought about it. Amy didn't even like her peers.

Although, "The bird's name is Chainsaw? That's kind of great."

She sort of looked like a Chainsaw.

At the sound of her name, Chainsaw squawked even louder than she had been and flapped her wings in what Ronan swore was her way of preening.

"She seems to like it and I sure as hell wasn't going to call her Fluffy," he said, making a face at the word even coming out of his mouth. "She'd probably peck my eyes out in my sleep."

And he'd deserve it for calling her something so painfully sweet.

"I don't know, she sort of looks like a Fluffy. Or a Cuddles," Amy drawled.

She was just kidding, Chainsaw. No need for eyeball-pecking.

"So how do you wind up going to a boarding school so close to home, anyway?" she wondered as she grabbed a bag of corn chips from a cabinet. "Isn't the point usually to get away?"

Or be shipped away, but same difference.

"Someone else did the research and enrolled me," Ronan told her, shrugging. "Probably wants to keep an eye on me."

Or have Ronan keep an eye on the island. It was most likely a combination of both.

Chainsaw squawked and spread her wings, making like she might fly before she settled down again and turned in a few circles. "It's far enough away that anyone who gives a shit has to plan their day around coming to see me. Not Texas but it works."

"For what it's worth, boarding school in Texas would probably be a pretty accurate reenactment of hell," Amy said. "So I think you made the right move. But I do appreciate being so far from home that my mom wouldn't fly out here unless I got sick or injured or she needed to scold me for wearing a pantsuit or something."

She loved her mom, but... yeah. Distance was a good thing.

She munched on a chip, then wondered, "So what do you think so far? I figure the guy with the pet raven might have an interesting take on this place."

Oh, he had some opinions. Many of them.

"The roads are too small, the fuck did all these stairs come from, it's cold, it's small, and people are scarily friendly."

There were some opinions. Chainsaw flapped her wings noisily. Ronan was going to take that as agreement.

"On the plus side, I haven't seen any pantsuits just yet." His one female teacher seemed to be too good for those.

"Yeah, I'm hoping to avoid them," Amy said. "I have seen a scary amount of princess dresses, though."

The princess dresses themselves weren't scary -- well, maybe a little -- but she'd definitely seen more of them than she had ever planned on seeing in a school setting.

"But I'm not loving the stairs either. And have you noticed the phosphorescent wildlife? I went for a walk today and saw a blue deer."

It was pretty creepy.

"Blue?" He'd definitely missed that and wasn't all that sad. "Well, that's a good signal for me to buy my own frigging water from somewhere not here. I don't want to end up a different color."
