Monster Truck Rally Campfire : Tuesday Afternoon

Theo was pretty pleased that he'd managed to finish another semester without going out of his mind. Mitchell would have been proud of him if he was still around. Theo smiled at the thought as he took a seat outside of his bouncy castle and stretched his legs out ( Read more... )

"What are you playing?" Loki, don't be creepy.

Yeah, Theo hadn't even heard him approach. He startled a bit and nearly dropped his phone but saved it from a messy dirt bath.

"Uh, Peggle," he said once he recovered. "Some game a friend from home told me I should play."

"Oh," Loki replied, thinking over the name to download at a later time. "You ought to try Candy Crush as well."

"What's Candy Crush?" Theo asked, pausing his game momentarily. "Thom's mentioned it but I haven't looked yet."

Loki frowned down at his own phone for a moment before opening the game and handing it over. "You may try, if you wish."

Theo set his phone down on his thigh and reached for Loki's phone, giving the screen and the game a once over.

"What do I do?" he asked, deciding to just press buttons in an attempt to make it look like he knew what he was doing. "Crush candy?"

Loki tsked, peering over his shoulder. "You are to remove as much as like candy as possible with very few moves made."

"Oh, this is like Bejeweled," Theo said, making a face at the mention of that game. "I played that game for like an entire summer. Such a bad decision. All I did was move colored blocks around."

And he'd done it a lot. Hey, his parents were never around and he needed stuff to entertain him.

"This is Bejeweled. With candy."

"Yes, but on your phone." A beat. "And there is candy involved."

Another beat.

"And frustration."

"Yeah." He remembered that from his time spent with Bejeweled. "How far have you managed to get? Can you beat the game?"

He'd surmised that Bejeweled had infinite levels making it unbeatable just to make everyone and their brother cry in frustration.

"I have not beaten it," Loki replied like it was some slight against his honor.

"You sound kind of upset about that," Theo noticed, glancing over at Loki. He resisted the urge to snicker. "How long have you been trying?"

"Not long." AGES AND AGES, THEO.

Theo wasn't sure he believed Loki there. Not when the other boy had seemed as frustrated as he had when he said he hadn't beat the game.

He pushed a few more buttons and crushed some candy. It didn't seem to be that hard but he knew how these games went.

"What level have you managed to get to?" he asked after a second.

"That does not matter," Loki muttered, plucking the phone back to cradle it to his chest. "It is a game."

He just needed to share his pain with others. Sorry, Theo.

Theo picked his own phone back up and nodded.

"You're right, it's totally just a game," he agreed. "But games are pretty darn addicting, aren't they? My psychologist could probably set up multiple sessions on why it's addicting and what it says about us."
