"Why the castles?" Gert wanted to know, stomping over to a log. Ow, the backache. "Are they somehow representative of our time here? I would've just had us stay the night in the dorms."

"There are probably people in the dorms," Jessica said. "I'm wondering why we couldn't just go to the hotel."

"Or better yet, make this a one-day thing instead of a whole weekend," Gert said. "No sleeping arrangements necessary."

"Come on, Gert. There's no way to fit all the fun we're going to have into just one day," Jessica said.

"You are the most annoyingly cheerful person I've ever met," Gert informed Jessica seriously. Okay, not seriously. "Where are you hiding the coffee stash?"

"Coffee's for people who aren't running SHIELD," Jessica said. "The horrifying dread that my world's security is on me and I'm away for the weekend is more than enough to keep me awake and get me into a jokey mood."

"Funny, knowing the Avengers are without a leader for the next forty-eight hours is just making me cranky," Gert said, wrinkling her nose. "That's what I get for having Captain Americas as my deputy. If you've got any ideas for how I can turn the terror into jokiness, I'm all ears."

"Sorry. It has to be a natural defense mechanism," Jessica said.

Gert mimed toasting a glass in Jessica's direction. "Lucky."

Except not really. What with the crazy amount of stress and all.

"So how are things?"

"Well, I've spent the past two months wondering how in the hell Nick Fury has done this for so long," Jessica said. "Maybe that's why he disappears for a months at a time. But aside from that, I've been okay. No huge disasters in the past month. Peter's doing well in school. That's about all I have time to worry about."

"My theory was always that he had a beach house on some tropical planet without cell service," Gert shared.

More seriously, she added, "That all sounds pretty good, though. Not danger-zone levels of stressful or anything. Way to go."

"Well, this is my world we're talking about. That's just a matter of time," Jessica pointed out. "I mean, we average about 5 successful apocalyptic events a year."

"Well, that at least offers some variety," Gert offered. "Mine's had the same up-and-coming wannabe-world-dominator running the evildoing scene for months now. I'd do anything for a one-off apocalypse threat."

[craftyladyparts]

"I'm not so sure about that. You guys still have a Canada, right? And you like it?" Jessica checked. Sorry, Canada. But in fairness, it had been a while since North America was hit with anything too traumatic and there wasn't anything the Ultimates could have done to stop it. "Enjoy the mundane nature of a consistent bad guy."

"Oh, you meant successful successful." Yikes. "Okay, for Canada's sake, I'll stick with what we've got."

"Good call," Jessica said. "I always feel that the fewer actual disasters you have, the better."
