The fact that it was Lightning Bug-themed meant that the cape he'd brought to offer the DM as a generous gesture probably wasn't necessary, though. But capes were too cool to have to be worn over ugly Christmas sweaters anyway, so he decided that was fine and stuffed it back in his backpack as he snacked on chips and waited for the game to start.
