Third Floor Common Room, Thursday Evening

Jan 12, 2012 17:13

So over the past two weeks on the island, Rebecca hadn't really done very much. Did some work for her classes, rearranged the furniture in her room and taken over part of Matt's closet... normal fun stuff. But she'd come to the conclusion that it was time to start networking with people. Forming alliances, as it were ( Read more... )

"That's a great deal of food," Dorothy remarked on her way into the common room. Her eyes wide as plates, it was like a feast at the emerald city... only with less fancy table settings.

"Is it some special event?" she asked in general, hoping someone would answer.

"Nope," Rebecca said sweetly. "Just thought people might be hungry after a long week!" That... wasn't technically over. It was Thursday, Rebecca. "Can I get you anything?"

"Well the week is hardly over," Dorothy said, looking over everything. "And if it's all the same, you don't have to get me anything. Is this really all to share?"

"Absolutely," Rebecca confirmed. "Help yourself!"

"Thank you," Dorothy said, giving a little curtsy. "I'm Dorothy, Dorothy Gale. It's very generous of you to share all this."

"Rebecca Logan," Rebecca returned, holding out a hand for Dorothy to shake. Bah, curtsying. It'd just be awkward in her teeny skirt, not to mention horribly antiquated. "And I'm happy to help! Are you new around here, Dorothy?"

"Oh," Dorothy said, looking quizzically at the hand for a moment before reaching out to take it for a shake. "Is this what you do in greeting now? Or where you're from?"

Getting used to people from different worlds was easy. People from the future was oddly a whole new herd of gump to deal with.

Rebecca side-eyed her.

"Yep," she said, managing in the nick of time to mask most of her dubiousness. "Are you from... not around here?"

"I'm from Kansas," Dorothy said. "Over a hundred years ago. I still don't quite understand that myself."

And she understood quite a bit of other things.

"Oh! Like the bald kid was saying," Rebecca recalled. "Right! That's totally weird."

"But I guess it can't be helped," Dorothy said, accepting the weirdness. "I don't suppose you could tell me what all you have here? I don't think I know the name of even half these dishes."

"I think she's going for an ice breaker," Claudia noted. "I'd say it's working. Hi, I'm Claudia."

"Dorothy Gale," she greeted, and even gave the other girl a curtsy. "It's just so much. Do you think she's a queen or a princess that she can afford this?"

"Around here you can't discount it." Which was more diplomatic than Claudia's immediate reaction having to do with rich fathers and royalty mentalities. "Where are you from? I'm guessing not 21st century America."

"Kansas," Dorothy explained. "1903. Which I suppose makes me a little outdated, at least in many of the things that I know."

"You'll pick it up," Claudia assured her. "Lesson one: industrialization of food production means that all this doesn't cost quite that much. She's probably showing off a little, though."
