Third Floor Common Room, Thursday Evening

Jan 12, 2012 17:13

So over the past two weeks on the island, Rebecca hadn't really done very much. Did some work for her classes, rearranged the furniture in her room and taken over part of Matt's closet... normal fun stuff. But she'd come to the conclusion that it was time to start networking with people. Forming alliances, as it were ( Read more... )

Claudia hadn't smelled anything that fabulous coming from her common room in, well, ever. She had been heading for the roof to mess around on her guitar again, but being a growing 17 year old, she couldn't resist the scent of tomato and basil.

"Wow. I'm not crashing a party here, am I?"

"Nope!" Finally, someone who looked normal. "Have a seat! Would you like anything? There's a ton of food."

Well, that was somewhat suspiciously enthusiastic.

"Uh, thanks." Hey, who was Claudia to turn down free food? She set her guitar aside, then offered her hand with a smile. "Claudia Donovan. Don't think we've met yet."

"Rebecca Logan," Rebecca offered, shaking Claudia's hand. "I'm new here." But well-versed in the art of making an impression! "Junior. From DC and Ohio. you?"

"Senior, from Minnesota by way of South Dakota." Not exactly what anyone would call cosmopolitan, really.

Claudia figured Rebecca was just nervous and thus over-prepared, or used to being queen of the school and trying to climb the nonexistent Fandom social ladder. She decided to go with benefit of the doubt and guess the former. "Throwing your own meet and greet, huh? I can dig that. And I definitely approve of the spread."

"Ohmygosh, I know," Rebecca gushed, totally aiming to just be labled 'nice girl who can carry a conversation.' That wasn't too much to ask for, right? "And it's from an awesome restaurant, considering... the island. So you should totally take stuff."

And enjoy the tasteful, subtly-monogrammed napkins!

Admittedly, Claudia was somewhat suspicious of cloth napkins, ever since that incident in the dinner party aisle back at the Warehouse. Sarah Polk's linens did not take kindly to less than pious table manners.

She decided not to bring that up. Rebecca was new yet, and probably didn't need any extra brain breaking.

"Hey, don't let the facades fool you. There's some seriously quality stuff in town. Have you had a chance to do much exploring?"

"Not too much," Rebecca answered, even though she'd been sort of scouring it as much as she could for the past four days of not having class. "Anything in particular I should make a point to see?"

"Well, I haven't been out to the diner since it changed management, but I hear they can make anything. There's a couple nice little boutiquey shops sprinkled around that are pretty neat. And the sex store? Surprisingly classy." Claudia shrugged. "I don't know how any of that might compare with DC or anything, but I like Fandom better than Minneapolis or Univille."

She liked most things better than Minneapolis or Univille, really.

"Univille?" Rebecca repeated, tilting her head. "Like, Brazil?" It would be a terribly butchered pronounciation, but.

"I wish. South Dakota badlands. Stands for 'unincorporated village' or something."

"Gotcha," Rebecca said, nodding. "But anyway, you're totally right about the sex store!" There was a segue. "It's way classy. Except the girl who works there, but I guess that's the sort of thing you have to deal with."

"You mean Karla?" She was the only one Claudia could think of off the top of her head that worked at 'Dite's. "She's . . . she's really nice, when you get to know her."

Claudia and Karla had never really patched things up after that whole initial magic v. science thing.

"No, the other one," Rebecca said, though she wasn't especially fond of Karla either. "Dark hair? Possibly goth? Very... chirpy?"

Claudia tilted her head. "I think I know who you mean, but I don't really know her. I think we run in different circles, you know?"

"Yeaaah, she seemed a little wacky."
