Third Floor Common Room, Saturday Evening

Feb 12, 2011 20:02

Wesley felt a little silly, entertaining his bratty child in the common room with board games that she seemed irrationally talented at. Honestly, what nine-year-old could beat a trained and experienced Watcher at Scrabble? He was positive that she was making the words up, but every time he consulted a dictionary, all he saw was Eloise's smug little ( Read more... )

Having kids was exhausting; Kennedy knew that from last year. This year wasn't any less exhausting, particularly with a daughter who was as into the training as she was.

The thing was, though, Kennedy was also a total pushover for anyone who knew how to get to her, and she'd volunteered to take the twins for a little while and let Tara have a break.

"Guys, I'm telling you," she was telling Asher and Miraya as they headed in, "the third floor common room isn't that different from the second floor one."

Ooh! Kids closer to her age! Possibly kids she could bully! Eloise was totally up for that. She got up from her seat, snatching up the bag of tiles so that Wesley couldn't cheat, and ambled over to the door. "Hello," she said sweetly. "I'm Eloise Morgan-Pryce. Who are you?"

"I'm Asher Tomaso Maclay, and this is Miraya Thalia Maclay," Asher answered, sliding into his role as spokesman. "We're twins."

He didn't seem terribly inclined to be bullied by anyone other than his sister.

"Really?" Eloise asked sarcastically. "I couldn't tell. Are you sure you're twins?"

Sorry, Asher. Bullying was kind of her thing. It came from her mother's side.

Mostly.

"I don't know," Miraya offered, resting a protective hand on her brother's shoulder. "Are you sure you don't want me to rearrange your face?"

... they'd been working on her temper.

Clearly these children were destined to be best friends.

Wesley took a moment to look from the twins up to the parent standing behind them. "Yours, I presume?"

Kennedy probably shouldn't have looked as proud of Miraya as she did, but she couldn't help it. "Hey, Wes," she replied. "Yeah, they're, um, mine. Was it obvious?"

"Quite," Wesley said dryly. "Something about her innately gentle nature, I think."

Sarcasm was fun.

"She picked on my brother," Miraya whined, looking up to her mother for reassurance. "I didn't really hit her."

Though if she had, Eloise would have deserved it.

Kennedy wouldn't disagree with her daughter's take on the situation, sad to say.

"Yeah, we're gonna try and keep it that way, right?" she told Miraya, casting a dubious look at Eloise. "'cause you know your mom's gonna give you that disappointed look if you get in fights with the other kids. You know the one."

"My mom's a lawyer," Eloise retorted, ignoring Kennedy. "If you hit me, I could sue you."

Probably not, Eloise. Probably not.

[[aaagh, my bad.]]

"I don't think so," Asher said skeptically. "I don't think kids can sue kids. Not unless somebody gets hurt really bad. Your mom would tell you that."

Eloise looked up at Wes for feedback, but he just nodded in agreement with Asher.

Wow. She'd actually been out-lawyered. It took a minute to process that one.

"Well, at least I'm not a cacafuego," she retorted after an embarrassingly long pause. And no, not even Wesley knew that word.

"And that's supposed to mean what, exactly?" Kennedy interjected, narrowing her eyes at Eloise, then leveling a look at Wesley.

In case there was any doubt whatsoever about where Miraya got that tendency of hers...

"It means you brag too much," Eloise explained. "It's rude to brag, you know. I mean, I'm smarter than everyone, so it's hard not to, but Mother still says it's rude."

Asher shot his sister a glance that meant no, you can't hit her now.

"It's really rude in Spanish," he supplied. "The word and bragging. If you're really smart you don't need to brag."
