Really, there were probably a hundred-odd other things that Jono could be doing right now to make better use of his time. He was going on that break trip, and so there was packing to be done, after all. But why pack, when procrastination was so much more appealing

Her tail was up, her ears were forward pointing and her whiskers were all intent. She was very very very serious about her adventure as she bounced-padded-wriggled her way up the stairs. Up and up and up and where would she end up?
... There was a door. She could smell-see-hear the outside on the other half of it.
It would not defeat her! Never!
She turned her head and mewed imperiously. Imploringly. Adorably.
Hinata could not possibly be blamed for laughing as she pushed the door open for her cat, really.
Yei paraded through the door like a tiny Queen, Hinata following behind, amusement on her face.
Air! Place she didn't see that often! And omigodwasthataperson?!?!?! Yei had to go explore!
HELLO PERSON! That was a teeny kitten sniffing around your feet now. Just for you.
While Hinata hung back a little and bit her lip to keep from laughing out loud.

//Hullo there...// Well, he wasn't all that invested in reading Schlachthof Fünf for the umpteenth time, anyhow. //... Small... kitten.//
Jono didn't spend much time around wee fuzzy things. Please pardon him for a moment while he closes his book and looks at Yei quizzically.

To show just how utterly delighted she was, she was going to rub her head against his ankle. Like so. And purr adorably. And he didn't really mind her doing that, did he?
She mewed up at him. He had a funny voice, did he know? It was weird for her to hear, but he sounded okay! HI! She was going to just plant her front paws on his leg and see what she could see. He had pants. Very good.
Maybe she could knead them? Yes? No? Purring time was now! Hihihihihi!
Hinata, meanwhile, was going to suffocate with the effort of keeping her giggles down. She should interrupt and she knew it--but...

//Is this yers?// Yes, he was pointing down at the adorable thing by his feet, raising an eyebrow up at Hinata and looking... lost. Lost was a good word for it.
Reply
And more purring. He was pointing at her! That meant he loved her! Right? Right?
Rightrightright!?!?!
Hinata wandered over, her eyes all but glowing with laughter. "I would say I'm hers," she said, lightly. Trying not to laugh. "Her name is Yei. She is very... ... affectionate."
Yes. He had probably figured that one out.

Really, the last cat he'd ever handled was Didi. That hadn't really counted.
//She seems pleasant enough.//
Even if she was leaving claw-marks in his trouser leg.
Reply
And, see, while she was distracted? She wasn't clawing his pants to bits! Win-win!
"I can--remove her," Hinata said, a bit tentatively. "If you d-do not wish her to bother you."
In which case Yei was going to be sad and pathetic and plaintive, but that was something she could handle.
Reply
//She's not doing any real harm, I suppose. I just wasn't expecting her to come right up t'me like that.//
Little shrug. Not much of one, as it had become imperative that he start scratching Yei gently behind the ears. Awww, kitten.
Reply
"She's not--shy," Hinata said, and in a way it was a bit embarrassing that her kitten was so much braver. "The world, in her mind, revolves around her and... it is a friendly world."
She wished she could visit it.

//I suppose when everybody she meets ends up showering her with affection, that's the way th'world would appear,// Jono noted, cupping his other hand around Yei's other side in order to help hold her up. Silly cat. //I can't imagine she's ever had any reason to think otherwise, really.//
She was too cute to kick, after all.

"If I have a say," she said, smiling because she did, in this. "Then her world will stay as it is. She is certainly in no hurry to grow up."
Two years a kitten. Hinata didn't need to know animals well to be aware that that was unusual.
Yei? Puuuurring. Life was fabulous.
Reply
Well, the purring was kind of endearing. At this rate, he'd end up asking if he could kitten-sit for Hinata sometime in the future. Maybe arrange playdates.
Affection like this wasn't really something that he got much of.
Reply
He could absolutely kitten-sit! Or playdates! Though Hinata might pause for a bit before asking if he had an animal as well...
Reply
He'd never really had the chance to settle in any one place long enough for it to be fair to the animal, unfortunately.
//Are they terribly difficult to take care of...?//
... Affection aside.
Reply
She shrugged a small bit.
"Mostly affection and care. They will let you know, in their own way, what is needed."
Like Yei. Who was going to mew at him. Surely he could pick her up?
Reply
... Not that Jono was contemplating a kitten. That would be absurd.
//They're fairly communicative little things, then,// he noted, blinking down at Yei for a moment before shrugging and giving in to her mewly demands. Bossy little critter she was, wasn't she? //I suppose that makes it easier, to some degree.//
And now he was going to cuddle her up against his shoulder. That seemed like the safest way to go about it, really.
