The Roof, Tuesday night

Sep 21, 2010 21:21

Raven was still unsettled by her meeting with Sherlock earlier that day, so when she came home from work she headed up to her usual spot on the roof to meditate. She knew she should let mere words upset her so much, especially when they came from a sociopath stranger. Sitting cross-legged on the roof near the garden, she closed her eyes and let ( Read more... )

It had been a hectic and overly social few days for Bruce. That's why he was going to the roof to get out into the night air and have some time alo... Yeah, that never really worked like he thought it would.

"Sorry, didn't mean to interrupt," Bruce said when he realized Raven was meditating.

"No, it is all right," Raven said, giving Bruce a smile. "I do not mind the interruption."

"In that case, hello," Bruce said, returning the smile. "Do you come out here to meditate often?"

"I like the garden," Raven said, nodding. "And the fresh air. Sometimes I will go to the preserve, but most often I will come up here to collect my thoughts."

"It's a good place for it," Bruce said. "I try to come up here once in a while to get some time to myself. I usually find somebody else trying to do the same thing, though. You'd think I'd have learned to find somewhere else by now."

Raven shook her head and laughed lightly. "Perhaps we should post a schedule," she said.

"Put it up in the stairwell on the fifth floor?" Bruce suggested. "That way people have the option to just go watch TV if they're going to have to talk to people anyway."

Bruce would still choose the roof, though. He'd choose the night air to the sound of television any day.

"With a sign that says 'Meditation in Progress, Do Not Disturb'?" Raven said. "I would not wish to disappoint people who wish to be on the roof, however. If I truly wanted privacy, I would go out to the preserve or stay in my room to meditate."

"Well, those would be the reasonable thing," Bruce agreed. "Or if you're up for a walk, there's the wooded area out in town. People almost never find their way over there."

"I could just teleport there as well," Raven said, nodding. Showoff. "Though I would enjoy the walk as well."

"Walking might take longer, but at least you get to enjoy the scenery on the way," Bruce said. Like he wouldn't teleport if he could. He absolutely would. "But just to make sure, teleporting is something you can do naturally, right? You didn't gain it through intense meditation?"

Because if she did, he was going to have to meditate a lot more.

"It is an ability I was born with," Raven confirmed, "and not something I learned through meditation. I am not entirely human."

"A lot of people around here aren't," Bruce said casually. It was just something you got used to. "Do you mind if I ask what you are?"

Raven hesitated. She wasn't hiding what she was any more, but she still wasn't use to admitting it. "My mother was of this world," she said. "She was from the city of Gotham. My father...he is a demon."

"Your mother was from Gotham City?" Bruce asked, focusing on the part that surprised him more. A teleporting daughter from a demon father made sense. But considering how few realities even had a Gotham, that was a stunner. "This may sound odd, but what state is Gotham in?"

"New York I think," Raven said. "Are you familiar with it? I know Dinah was from a world similar to my mother's, and others here in Fandom as well." Fandom was rapidly becoming a Gotham vacation hotspot.
