Fifth Floor Common Room, Saturday morning

Sep 04, 2010 07:47

Bruce was just going to walk past the common room and back to his dorm after his morning run, but a glance into the room meant that he saw one of the more bizarre sights he'd seen recently. There was a disembodied hand holding the remote control. It was channel surfing. Occasionally it would use the on-screen guide and scroll quickly through that ( Read more... )

Cara was not in a pleasant mood as she stalked up the stairs and into the common room. She cast a tight, insincere smile Bruce's way. "I see you've met our invaders."

"It's not a very exciting invasion so far," Bruce said as he watched the hand with the remote pause briefly on QVC - presumably for the brief glimpse of a hand model - before continuing on with its march through all the channels. "You look happy."

If looks could kill, there would be some dead hands in the room. "I woke up to two of those in my room, trying to make off with things that didn't belong to them." Her gloves, to be specific.

"So you caught them red-handed?" Bruce asked.

He wasn't much for jokes, but he had a very good sense of when one would go over as well as that one surely would with Cara. And sometimes you just needed to live dangerously.

Very punny, Bruce.

Cara pursed her lips before replying. "Considering that they were wearing the items in question?" She held up one gloved hand (her own, just to be clear) and wriggled her fingers. "You could say that."

Bruce gave a small smile at that. "What did you do to them after you caught them?"

"I suggested that they should return my gloves if they wanted to avoid having fifty-two bones each instead of between them. They were remarkably quick to do so." Cara could be quite persuasive when she choose to.

"And then they just fled?" Bruce asked. "Apparently hands have a strong sense of self-preservation."

"First they offered to help me dress." At least that's what she thought they'd been offering to do. "I declined." You couldn't trust thieving hands not to be perverts too.

Bruce gave a nod. "Smart move. Well, if it helps, the hands up here seem docile. Maybe even lazy."

Cara eyed the hands currently in the room warily. "Or they're just trying to lull you into a false sense of security before striking."

"Possibly. But I don't think so. I've been watching them for a while. They seem fairly unmotivated," Bruce said.

He was good at reading body language, you see.

"Which begs the question of what motivates a hand." A sentence Cara had never thought she'd utter. At least not without being under the influence of powerful magic or drugs.

"Judging by the hands in your room, comfort, warmth, protection, maybe even style," Bruce suggested. "Judging by these hands, they just want to be college students. The one without the remote may try to high five you."

Cara wasn't entirely sure what a high five actually was, but that didn't stop her glaring at the hand in question and telling it "Don't."

If disembodied hands could attempt to whistle nonchalantly while trying to give the impression that the idea of high fiving a Mord'Sith would never ever cross its mind, then it would have.

"Impressive," Bruce said. "I've never seen a disembodied hand look so nervous."
