Karla was one of the few people that Cassidy wouldn't snap at and she tried to pull in her temper as she turned to look at her friend and fellow Queen.
"There are some horribly inconsiderate people on this island, Karla," Cassidy said, as if Karla wasn't aware of such a thing. "I mean, I know the question was about when we wouldn't sacrifice ourselves for somebody or something, but to just dismiss people you may not know as unimportant..." She was pulling weeds with a vengeance, but was now making sure she was careful where she tossed them. "Maybe I'm naive in thinking that it shouldn't matter if you know someone personally or not before you risk yourself for them."
"Of course! It's still one of my favorites." Karla was quiet a moment, concentrating on getting the taproot of a very stubborn weed. "Cassidy...we're Blood. That's something that no one here is going to fully understand, no matter how close to us they become. We were born to be the caretakers of the land and its people and we feel that, down to our very Selves. Not everyone does. Not even amongst our own people."
Cassidy's shoulders drooped a little. "I know that, really I do, but it's just difficult to hear someone being so dismissive about somebody's life just because he may not know them." She frowned at the weed she was working on. "Everything within me wanted to rage at him, but I kept silent. I would not embarrass myself or disrupt Professor Skywalker's class like that."
Oh, give it time.
"At least I was able to converse with two more intelligent students that didn't seem to be of the opinion that boy was. Of course, being female, they were more sensible."
"Oh, well, males." Karla wrinkled her nose. "Half the time, their brains are in their cocks, Cassidy. You know that--you have a brother."
Of course, there were a goodly number of males about who would throttle her if they heard her say that. But Cassidy needed cheering up and a bit of coven-talk would do that faster than anything else.
"I'm pretty sure Professor Skywalker would have liked to hear what you had to say, though," she added. "What you say to other students is probably even more important than what you say to him."
"Well, yes, males. How males manage to get through their day sometimes..." Of course, Hiccup had been relatively smart for a male and that just made her miss her former roommate all the more.
"I'm afraid that my thoughts on the matter weren't very nice where that male was concerned, Karla. I wasn't sure of the Protocol for the class so I kept everything to myself." She tossed another weed aside. "But the conversations I had with Elphaba and Zatanna were more satisfactory, even if Elphaba did think that the class was morbid at first because of our ages."
Karla grimaced at Zatanna's name, but didn't say anything. Raven was right when she said that this Zatanna was not that Zatanna. So while Karla would nurse her grudge for as long as she could, she wouldn't try to turn others against the girl.
At least, not until she showed her true colors. And hideous shoulder-pads.
"I think I've seen Elphaba. She was at the Reserves yesterday. Green, right?"
Cassidy saw the grimace, but didn't say anything. She figured that if there was something she needed to know, Karla would tell her.
"Mhmm," Cassidy said, nodding. "She seemed very nice. I tried explaining to her how I was able to be a Queen and go away to school and how it wasn't a burden at all, but I don't know if I confused her or not."
"Probably," Karla said with a knowing sigh. "Everyone else's idea of what a Queen is is pretty stupid."
Not biased at all, our Karla.
"The only thing you need to become a Queen in this world is the right parents or the right husband. There's nothing special about you. Our Queens and theirs are polar opposites. For the Blood, we're important, not our lineage. For them, it's the relationship that's important--the female herself could be replaced by damn near anyone without a second thought. That doesn't make sense to me."
Cassidy gave her a horrified look, the annoyance in Ethics class pushed aside for now.
"What? But what about the Land? What about the people that Queens take care of? What kind of world would put more importance on a relationship than on their responsibility?" She shook her head. "You're right, that doesn't make any sense at all."
And then, because she was curious.
"What did the High Lord say when you told him that?" Because Cassidy assumed Karla had told her Uncle all about that strangeness.
Karla gave Cassidy an amused glance. "Oh, he had quite a lot to say about that, let me tell you," she said, trying not to snicker. "He tried to be even-handed, explaining about how different peoples did different things and without the connection to the land that being Blood gives us, we would have to come up with other ways to choose leaders as well. Except then he kept talking and basically came back around to saying that it was a stupid way to govern and to just be happy being Blood," she finished with a laugh. "He said it very politely, though. Uncle Saetan prefers to be polite."
"Your Uncle is a very smart man and," she gave Karla a shy smile. "I'm glad that you trusted me enough to introduce me to someone who is so important to you."
Karla gave her a warm smile back. "He's the High Lord of Hell. He's practically an institution at this point." She filed that away to tell him at the next opportunity. "Besides, do you know what he'd do to me if he found out there was another witch on the island and didn't tell him? I'd be murdered. Twice."
She sounded amused--after all, she's been in that same position often enough--but her eyes were concerned. "Everything okay?"
