Main Campfire | Afternoon | Tuesday | July 27

Alex didn't have a damn thing going on today which made it easier to decide to hoof it out to the campfire and take a seat there. Outside meant he could smoke and not get bitched at by cabinmates. Outside meant he could watch people passing by, maybe entertain himself by annoying them. Outside meant not feeling like the walls were closing in ( Read more... )

Wesley walked over to the campfire without looking up from the book in his hands - oddly enough, the same book that had spent the weekend as a cranky older British man. When he finally looked up to choose a log to sit on, he saw Alex. "Oh, hello," he said. "Would you believe this isn't even the first time this week that I've come across someone smoking at the campfire?"

Okay, it wasn't the most fascinating thing in the world. Whatever.

"Not surprising," Alex said, squinting at Wesley through the smoke from his cigarette. "Lots of people smoke here. Which one did you meet?"

"Oh.". Well, how was he supposed to know?

"I believe her name was Ellie, or... Effy, maybe?" he ventured.

Alex tilted his head and smirked. "Effy smokes. Ellie, as far as I know, doesn't. She British like you?"

"Yes, I believe she said she was from Bristol?"

"Yeah, Effy," he said, nodding and keeping most anything else off his face. "I know her but I know most of the smokers. It's a little club. We usually meet on the dorm roof but we can't out here. We got a secret handshake and everything."

No, they didn't.

To Wes' credit, he only fell for that story for a second. It probably showed on his face as soon as he figured out that it was crap, though. He grinned knowingly as if it was obvious.

"What? You don't think we do?" he asked, not really manage to contain his own smirk. "We could. We're cool enough to, I think. We're rad."

And saying that was just painful. Alex made a face.

Wesley smirked a bit himself. "Oh, yes, you're social butterlies," he laughed.

"Hey, I'm talking to you without moping and brooding. Lucky you, you caught me on a good day," he joked. "What're you up to anyway? No classes?"

"Yes, I seem to be spending a great deal of time with people lately who are prone to sulking and brooding," he observed.

"And no, I don't have class today," he added, sounding (as only Wes could) actually disappointed about that. "But this campfire proved to be an excellent place to read this past weekend, so I thought I'd come out here. And yourself?"

"No classes and I spent too much time inside last weekend so I thought I should get some fresh air," he said and shrugged lazily. "Wouldn't want to get pale and end up looking British."

Well, he'd seen Effy without her clothes so he was generalizing. And teasing.

"Besides, figured people would miss me."

Mock-scandalized, Wesley protested, "I resent that accusation! Not all British people are -" He pulled up his sleeve to examine his forearm and promptly modified what he was going to say, "- er, quite this pale."

"Oh, yes, we've all been waiting on the edge of our seats for your return to society," he drawled, having had no clue that Alex had even been hiding from society at all.

Alex didn't even feel the need to say anything about Wesley being pale. The arm spoke for itself and he just snickered.

"It was too fucking hot to be out here, socializing like a girly girl," he replied, shrugging. "I'd rather not sit down and start immediately sweating. If I sweat, I'd better be doing something fun."

"And I imagine socializing isn't quite at the top of that list?" he guessed, smiling.

"Not really," he said and shrugged. "I socialize when I want and with who I want. I'm just feeling a little calmer today. So, I took advantage and decided to socialize. That makes you a lucky guy, Wes."
