Sixth Floor Common Room, Friday Night

By mutual agreement, Karla and her parents decided not to talk about about what was going on in Glacia and why she was here at Fandom. They still wished to know and were biding their time; Karla had pretty much decided that telling them would be a waste of time. All they could do was feel bad about it.

Instead, they had spent the afternoon ( Read more... )

Triela didn't sleep much. She didn't need to. So sometimes she wandered around the dorms late at night.

Sometimes she ran into other people who were up late.

"Karla," she nodded. Her eyes swept over the two adults.

"New people." She glanced back at Karla. "From Glacia?" Her hand hovered near her jacket. In a... totally nonthreatening way?

"From Glacia," Karla agreed, glancing down briefly. She held her hand out to stop Triela. "They're...they're my parents."

Triela's hand was already inside her jacket when Karla held up her hand. "Family isn't always a good thing," she pointed out. Case in point: Hobart.

"I know," Karla replied dryly. "But they're...they're my parents," she said again. "If they were still alive...things would be different. So different," she said wistfully. "Would you like to meet them and see?"

"Sure." Triela even took her hand out of her coat.

Not that she suspected Karla's parents would have recognized the threat anyway.

Well, Audric might consider the idea of a hidden weapon, even if he had no idea what the gun was supposed to be, anyway.

After several repetitions, introducing her parents was getting less odd. Though the fancy titles and Protocol still felt funny. "Mother, Father, may I introduce you to Lady Triela, one of my dearest friends. She did much to help me feel safe and settle in when I first arrived. Triela? This is my mother, Queen Ilyse, and my father Prince Audric."

Unlike with the males, Ilyse had no intentions of hanging back. Especially with an introduction like the one Karla had just given. "Lady Triela," she said sweetly, holding out her hands in greeting. "I'm so pleased to meet you. Please, call me Ilyse."

"And I am simply Audric," her father said, stepping up and wrapping an arm around his wife's waist. He beamed at Triela, though, as he did.

"Lady Triela?" Karla got asked in bemusement as Triela reached out to take Ilyse's hands. Well one of them. Triela tried to always keep a hand free.

Just in case.

"It's a pleasure to meet both of you," she nodded to them each in turn. "And I'm glad you came to visit." Karla missed them, after all.

"Just go with it," Karla said with a grin. "If I have my way, you'll be in my Court anyway."

Ilyse blinked slightly--whether at her daughter's open admission to having a landen in her Court or at the unusual greeting--but gamely went along with it. "We're pleased to have been given the opportunity," she replied. "It's been very nice to see the young woman our little girl has grown into."

Triela snorted. Then nodded. "She's quite capable."

Competence was the highest compliment she knew.

"And we've discussed why I can't join your Court." As much as she thought she'd like it.

"I don't accept that," Karla replied. "You know I don't."

"Some things can't be changed just by trying hard." Triela shrugged. "What I am is one of those things."

Karla looked like she was about to object, but she was forestalled by her mother's question. "Thinking of setting up your Court already?" Ilyse asked, sounding surprised. "Darling, you're still so young. Both your Virgin Night and your Offering are years away!" She laughed a bit, though she couldn't hide the worry in her eyes. "Even so, you have several years of formal training under the Territory Queen to serve before you even need worry about such things."

Karla darted Triela a quick glance, giving her a small shake of her head.

Whether Triela listened to her, however...
