Inspired by her French class today, Rilla had slipped into her room to pick up her copy of a Victor Hugo novel (in English. Her French wasn't nearly that good) and curled up on a sofa in the common room with the book, an apple and a cup of tea (which tasted a bit stewed. Rinoa approached the other dark-haired girl, head tilted so she could see the name on the spine. Victor Hugo? Didn't ring a bell.

"Is it good?" she asked.

Rinoa was blissfully unaware of things like 'boundaries.'

"It's one of my favorites," Rilla said. "It's quite romantic, and tragic, and beautiful."

"Does it have a happy ending?" Rinoa asked, sighing happily. "I like stories better when they have happy endings, although some of them cheat to get there."

"Well, the hero dies at the end, but his daughter is guaranteed a happy life," Rilla said. "It's really terribly beautiful."

"Oh, those are almost as good as happy endings," Rinoa said with a swoon. "The ones where it's very tragic and heartbreaking. Won't his daughter miss him, though?"

"Oh, her husband is quite dashing," Rilla replied, "so I'm sure she's in good hands."

"That counts as a happy ending, for me," Rinoa laughed. "Dashing husbands outrank fathers any day."

Spoken like a girl with Daddy Issues!

Rilla giggled. "I'm sure my father would have other thoughts, but that's why I don't ask him these things."

"Your opinion matters more than his," she said easily. "And that book sounds better than the one I've been reading. I really need to check out the library here."

"You must," Rilla said with a smile, "and then you should read it and tell me you love it very much, even if it isn't true."

"I'm sure I'll love it," Rinoa laughed. "Are there others you'd recommend? I hope the library here is big. I just borrowed a book from someone else, but he warned me it was tripe, and he was right."

"Oh, lots," Rilla said. "I left most of mine at home, but I needed to have some friendly faces around me."

"I hope we'll have time to read here," Rinoa said. "Everything's been so crazy lately. I used to sneak down to the library while everyone else was busy."

"Everyone seems to be coming from such fascinating places," Rilla replied. "My village is so small they are still talking about the day my brother and his friend raced pigs through town, and that was years ago."

"They raced pigs through town?" Rinoa laughed. "Was it just to upset everyone? Did any of the pigs get hurt?"

"It was a dare," Rilla said with a laugh, "and they were both young enough to be riding on one a piece. It was quite a scandal."
