Fifth Floor Common Room; Sunday Morning [ 05/09 ].

May 09, 2010 08:50

Sleep? Who could possibly sleep at a time like this? Although Ariel was absolutely exhausted from yesterday, the seahorses in her stomach were stampeding about in excitement and so she didn't have much for sleeping. Even the thrill of sleeping in a human bed was enough to keep her up. So it was tired but still bouncing Ariel that had padded ( Read more... )

Kate had been on her way to see if Bod happened to be alone and awake yet, or failing that, she'd been thinking of going to the roof, but... There was something going on in this common room. She had to investigate.

And boggle.

"What are you doing?" she asked from the doorway.

Ariel twirled around quickly at the sound of a voice, red hair whipping around and the momentum almost making her lose her balance. She wavered a little, but she barely seemed to notice as she brandished forward what was, for all intents and purposes, a pair of tongs as if it was the most magical item in all the world. She squeezed it with her hand, snapping it at the air.

She didn't know what it was but she knew one thing. It was amazing!

And, if the tongs weren't amazing enough, she gestured toward everything else...and it really was practically everything else...that she'd extracted from the drawers and cupboards with utter glee.

Uh huh.

That was one overly excited person. Overly excited about tongs and... random crap, even.

So, Kate was just going to take a moment to raise an eyebrow, eyeing the girl and the mess around her, before asking, "Why?"

Why? Ariel's eyes widened at the girl in surprise for such a question and she swung her arms in a gesture toward all the wonderful, amazing things that surrounded her in a clear indication of why not?

A better question, if you asked Ariel, would be why were all these fantastic treasures hidden away in all these drawers and cupboards in the first place?

Kate raised both her brows at that, taking a few steps further into the room. "Yeah, I still don't get it," she said. "But I hope you're gonna clean all this shit up, too."

Not that it was Kate's problem, anyway, really. She didn't even live on this floor.

Ariel gave the other girl a slightly disparaging, mostly pointed look because of course she was going to clean it up. In her own fashion. And to say that it wasn't at all shit. This was one of the most amazing collection of treasure she had ever seen.

Seriously! She picked up a gravy boat, showing it off in her palm. Was this not the most incredible thing ever? It wasn't even cracked!

"Yeah, that is one interesting thing," Kate said, in a way that made it clear that it really was not. "So I'm guessing you don't really have much stuff like this where you're from, huh?"

The fact that the other girl didn't seem to be speaking, like, at all, hadn't quite registered yet. It was early; give her time.

Ariel shook her head, and despite the attitude, she was just too excited to really care, so she smiled at the other girl; she really didn't have stuff like this where she was from, and anything she did have had been completely destroyed by her father, so to be surrounded by so many of them, in such good condition.....it was like a dream to Ariel.

And she looked now at the other girl hopefully, holding out the gravy boat a little more. She shrugged to show her own ignorance, and then looked at her with eager inquisitiveness that maybe she could tell her what it was for, what did it do, what were the cute little bushy tailed animals etched into the design on the side?

Leave it to Fandom to have a gravy boat decorated with squirrels.

"You want to know what that is? It's a gravy boat. So you can pour gravy on stuff. Not really sure why they call it a boat but eh, language is weird."

Kate could be nice, too. Especially when it went well with feeling smart. Being able to identify stuff you find in a kitchen. Yes.

She leaned a little closer to peer at the design. "... Are those squirrels? Jesus, Fandom, that's not even funny."

Gravy boat. Boat, Ariel understood; gravy might have to wait, because, as she examined the gravy boat again and thought of it in context, despite the girl's claim that she didn't know why it was called such, she couldn't help thinking of it as a boat for the furry tailed creatures (squirrels) on the etching. That would explain why her hand danced it along the air as if riding on waves, to a nautical tune in her head, and she chuckled to think of the squirrels inside of it.

And she knew she saw them somewhere before, probably at the picnic, and so she pointed again to the squirrel on the design, and then mimed a pen in her hand and writing.

Oh, that was a gesture Kate recognized.

"You already saw the squirrels?" she asked, making a face. "The little bastards take notes for the radio."

... She didn't expect the girl to know what that was, either.

"You know, like news? Gossip that gets broadcast to all of the island?"

Ariel's interest piqued.

Gossip? Ariel was a sixteen year old girl; some things very easily transgressed all bounds of species and habitation.

Besides, yesterday's mention of gossip had gotten Rinoa on board with trying to help find someone for Ariel to kiss, so she definitely liked gossip, oh yes.

Funnily enough, Kate was a sixteen year old girl who did not like gossip.

She had her reasons.

"There's this radio broadcast every night," she said by way of explanation, "that talks about what's been going on on the island that day. It can't always be trusted, so really, it's mostly just gossip."

Radio broadcast. Ariel tucked that away in her head as something to be discovered if she could manage it, nodding very seriously at the other girl's explanation. After all, she was on a mission, and any source of information, even if it was unreliable, could be a very valuable tool.

Kate shrugged, then said, "I'm Kate, by the way, and--"

She paused as she realized something. Finally. "Wait. You haven't said a single word since I got here, have you?"

Ariel smiled, a little amused and a little proud, in a certain way, that the 'conversation' had gotten this far without her noticing. She shook her head. Nope. Not a word. But what can you do? She shrugged, and then made sure to point to her ARIEL nametag from yesterday, which was not going anywhere any time soon if Ariel could help it.
