A tiny, hyperactive blonde ran into the room. "HI! HI! HI!"

Jo still hadn't mastered use of the indoor voice.

"Hello," Edmund replied, a touch overwhelmed by the very loud voice. "Do you like my castle?"

"It's awesome!"

Jo was loud, but also easily impressed.

He looked very proud of himself. "Yes, it is. I built it all on my own. Do you want to have a look?"

Jo nodded furiously, clambering up on the nearest section of the fort. "Uh huh."

"But don't break anything!" he protested. "If you break it, you have to fix it."

"I don't break stuff," Jo called out. "I'm careful."

"But you're a girl. Girls are always breaking things. My sisters are girls and they always break my things." No they didn't.

"Nuh uh, boys break things, they're clumsy and smelly."

"I'm not clumsy or smelly and I don't break things." He did break things, quite often. "I'm a king!"

"I didn't vote for you!"

"That's because you don't vote for kings," he rolled his eyes. "It's a British thing. You wouldn't understand."

After that incident with Timmy Johnson, Ellen had made it quite clear that Jo wasn't allowed punch, kick, or bite other children, no matter how much they annoyed her. So instead she threw a pillow at Edmund.

There was a muffled cry of protest behind the pillow, which he grabbed after it had hit his face. He tossed it to the ground. "Stop that! You're ruining it!"

"Well, you're being mean!"

Edmund looked very flustered at that accusation. "I most certainly am not! You're the one who came in here and started throwing things!"
