"Do I gotta kiss you?" Aravis wondered. "I have my own horse."

"No," Mat said slowly, "but it'd be polite to."

"It'd be polite to kiss my hand because I'm a lady," Aravis pointed out.

"A real lady?" Mat replied. "Like in the stories?"

"Yes," Aravis said, straightening her posture. "I'm a Tarneena." Someday she'd get that word. "I'm a lady. My father is a lord."

"Ooooh," Mat said, much more impressed than he'd be in a few years. "I've never met a Tarnea."

It was acceptably close to Aravis. "So do I gotta pay you to ride your horsie? 'Cause I have my very own and he's a lady's horse. He's all gentle."
Aravis much preferred horses that went fast, honestly, but she was being a lady today.

Mat frowned in thought. "I'm not sure it works like that. I'll have to check with Da."

"What's your Da do?" Aravis wondered. "My father is the lord of our province. He's very busy."
Which, in Aravis' opinion, was not a good thing.

"D'you get horses for free?" she wondered.

Mat shook his head. "He gets horses and gives the men tabac and wool and sometimes little boys if you don't out of there right now, Matrim," he recited.
