The smell of pizza wafted down to Jonas's room and, before he could stop himself, he found himself peering interestedly into the common room, eyes on Jack and then the food and then back on Jack.

"Old," Jonas said because he didn't really know. "They were a lot of them. They weren't my friends. I didn't have many of those. We didn't have pizza either."

"Maybe." Jonas didn't sound so sure but he did pick up a piece of pizza that was the size of his head. "I made mud pies with Karla yesterday. She called me her friend."

"I'm from Prague," Jack said. "It's a long, long way away, so here I'm mostly from the island. I" -- he faltered and decided the story of his blood family wasn't really one for a little boy. "I don't have any real little siblings, but I have three here at school. Does that count at all?"

"Maybe." Jonas peered owlishly up at Jack. "What's that mean? Having siblings but they're not real? Are they invisible?"

"No." Though, considering how rarely Jack checked on his, they might as well be. "When we come to this school, we each get another student assigned as a sibling. I've been here long enough to have three. It's not the same as growing up with someone, but it makes the school feel a little smaller."
