First Floor Lobby, Friday Evening: Stealth Meeting of Stealthy People

Mar 26, 2010 18:49

Elena had put a few signs up, in the dorms and around town. Last-minute affairs, nothing fancy, just marker on scraps of paper.

SNEAKY PEOPLE
COME TO THE LOBBY
AT 8 PM
TO DISCUSS WAYS
WE CAN HELP

And so she was there at 8, waiting for people to show up and trying not to feel self-conscious.

Explain who you are and what your history with stealth is, just so no one else is worried about you. Then claim a spot in town that you're going to watch, tomorrow.

"I'm Ben," he said with a slightly shy smile, "and stealth is kind of what I do. I'm trained in infiltration and extraction, but generally more for people and less for...creatures."

"Probably easier if we skip the extraction entirely," Elena nodded. "Or do you think we should try it? Getting a live target back for questioning would be a boon, but I'm not sure whatever-those-are even speak our language."

Not to mention the potential injuries involved in capture, as opposed to following.

"Headshot and dissection probably won't get us very far either," Ben said aloud, "unless this is like the zombies and we get lucky and hit the head monster thing by accident."

"Especially bad if we're still hallucinating, and the headshot's another student," Elena shuddered. "We could try for a tracking device, but that'd mean mocking them up tonight, and then getting close enough to stick one on without arousing attention."

"Unless we could tag it like one of those animals in the documentary holos," Ben said, "using a sniper rifle?"

He paused and admitted, "not that I've made a tracking device before."

"Me either," she admitted. "But we have sniper rifles in the salle. I wonder if we have any tranquilizers? We could at least slow them way down, unless we fuck up the dosage."

"One of them's mine," Ben admitted with a tiny smile. "The rifle. Not any tranqs."

"I might have tranquilizers," Elena said, frowning. "But they're meant to be drunk and not injected into the veins, and they're calibrated for humans anyway."

She exhaled, shaking her head. "Maybe we start with following, and tomorrow we regroup and decide if we want to get fancy with it."

"Good a plan as any," Ben said. "I'll find a rooftop to sit on."

"Sounds good," Elena nodded. "I'm going to take one of the street corners, I think. I'm better with urban settings."

"I'm okay in both," Ben said. "Not a lot of assassinations in the woods, but it makes for better hiding spots."

"I'm Robin, and I'm really small and quiet when I walk."

"That's a good start," Elena agreed. "Have you ever tried tailing someone? It's going to be really easy to lose people in the fog, but it's better to play it safe and hang back and lose someone than to possibly be caught."

"That's something I haven't tried." he admitted. "You're probably right. I sure wouldn't want to get caught by those things."

"Not at all," she said, giving him a light smile. "Keep your distance, and trust your instincts. If something feels like a trap, it probably is. And when in doubt, run for it."

Losing a lead was bad, but sticking too close and getting killed was worse. Neither got the team any intel, but the latter lost them valuable assets.
