The meeting today was in its usual place instead of the dreaded Danger Shop. There were even donuts! Because those made the past weekend melt away

Tara could let Merlin have the donuts; she was just happy it was finally sunny enough to meet outside again. She sat on a tree stump and listened to the instructions.

The doughnuts were not so much a concern right now; Kennedy waited until the explanations were over and, looking more serious than usual, made her way over. "Hey," she said quietly, reaching out to touch Tara's arm. "Can you take a rain check on the usual workday goodies delivery this week?"
Re: Arrive and Mingle - 03/10/10life_inshadowMarch 10 2010, 18:40:30 UTC
"S-sure," Tara said, frowning in concern as she turned to the girl. You didn't need to see auras to be able to tell that this was Kennedy's Something Is Wrong face.
Re: Arrive and Mingle - 03/10/10brat_inslayageMarch 10 2010, 18:50:07 UTC
Kennedy was sort of broadcasting Something-Wrong-ness at the moment. "I'm heading out this afternoon," she explained. "Something's going down at home for Dru, and I'm going with her." Translation: she wouldn't have accepted 'no' for an answer in any case.
Something might have been wrong, yes, but there was an undercurrent of excitement in Kennedy's voice anyway.

"Yeah, Dru, my little sibling. Maybe we'll get to kill demons. Don't know yet. It might turn out to be nothing," Kennedy tried to reassure her, even though honestly, she was hoping it would pan out differently than that. "I just can't let her go alone, you know?"
She smiled halfway. "Thought about volunteering you, too, but I didn't wanna party-crash for you." Plus there was the crazy-protective factor kicking in. "We'll get our chance to team up sometime, right? When I get back from this."

"... right," Tara said slowly. She was concerned, but she had to see how it was an amazing opportunity for Kennedy, weird as it was to put it in those words -- and she had utter faith that Kennedy could take care of herself.
Which didn't mean she wasn't going to fuss. "Are you sure you're going to be okay? No crazy risks or anything?"
Re: Arrive and Mingle - 03/10/10brat_inslayageMarch 10 2010, 19:33:45 UTC
...yeah, ever since they'd talked about it that one time Kennedy had entertained the occasional fantasy of the two of them going off to kick freelance demon ass, so it was on her mind. But this was someone else's world and someone else's rules, and some part of her mind had figured out in less-than-concrete terms that it was going to be touch-and-go.
"No crazy risks," she replied, which was... probably less reassuring than it ought to be, given her skewed definition of the term. More seriously, she added, "I know, you want me to stay safe. But I can't let her go without backup. I'll try and text you if I can, at least." She had no idea how good her reception was going to be in South Dakota.

It was someone else's world and someone else's rules, and while Tara was hardly helpless, the risk caused by Kennedy's emotional tie to her was probably greater than any benefit she'd provide. Intellectually, Tara knew all that.
It just didn't mean it wouldn't be cool to go fight demons together sometime.
"You're her big sister, right? You have to try to help," Tara said, trying to sound confident and not worried out of her gourd. "Just -- be in touch if you can. Do you have any idea how long you'll be gone?"
Re: Arrive and Mingle - 03/10/10brat_inslayageMarch 10 2010, 19:54:43 UTC
"Exactly. You get it."
And Kennedy was that girl who would quite literally die for someone she cared about if she had to, even if she hadn't bothered to think all that through, so yeah.
"Don't know. I'm thinking a couple of days at least?" Attempts to sound confident notwithstanding, she wasn't passing up the chance to give Tara a hug. "I'll be okay. Gonna miss you, though."
Re: Arrive and Mingle - 03/10/10life_inshadowMarch 10 2010, 20:02:23 UTC
"A couple of days," Tara echoed.
It could have been a couple of years, the way she clung during the hug.
"Miss you too," she whispered against Kennedy's ear. "M-monday or whenever you get back" -- because it was not allowed to be later than Monday -- "you'll have to tell me the whole story, okay?"
Re: Arrive and Mingle - 03/10/10brat_inslayageMarch 10 2010, 20:10:38 UTC
Kennedy wasn't exactly in a hurry to let go, either, and clinging pretty fiercely herself.
"Promise I'll tell you everything. Hey, you never know. We luck out, we could be back in a few hours." That didn't sound like as much fun, though. "We're good. I'll be okay. Don't worry, babe."

Oh, God, now she was going to have to hang on a little tighter, because she was a complete sucker for the snuffling. Kennedy glanced over at the single duffel bag deposited on a nearby log, and back at Tara with a crooked grin. "Would you believe me if I said I already was?"

Since he wasn't, he simply shot the man an amused look before returning his attention to the rest of the meeting.

There was ... a tiny bit of wistfulness under Tara's concern, yes. Nobody ever thought of her for things like this.
Not that she was sure she wanted them to.

Might as well tell her not to breathe, Kennedy.

And then there was more clinging, and a snuffle.
" ... should let you go pack, huh?"
