Fourth Floor Common Room; Monday Evening [ 09/21 ].

The whole incident with the hair had almost caused Cal to forget exactly what day this was. Monday. That meant more than just having to work at the library. That meant Rumor Girl, on the TV, and Cal was there.

Pretending to ignore it while cooking food. No burgers this time, but something just as good and Greek and handy for TV watching: Read more... )

"Okay, that smells awesome," Rose said, coming into the common room. "You weren't kidding about making good food."

Cal laughed a little. "Never underestimate the power of the Mediterranean Diet," he said. "It's souvlaki. Lamb kabobs with veggies and a family secret seasoning that I'd have to kill you if I told you. Want some?"

"God, yes," she said quickly. "You're totally my favorite, Cal.". She wandered closer to the kitchen to observe all the goings on. "Why does your family have a secret seasoning recipe?"

Girl grew up in a boarding school. Family food is confusing.

Ah, it was the small things in life, like food making cute girls instantly adore you, that Cal gave far too much weight to. He grinned a little. "Because we're Greek?" he offered. "We take food way too seriously. If someone else knows how to make your recipe, then you've got nothing to offer and might as well kill yourself."

Rose laughed at the - she hoped - hyperbole. "Or kill the person who learned it apparently," she teased. "It's totally a good plan. My dad's Turkish or something. Which is sorta close by to Greece. I think."

The last was offered as a total throwaway comment and not anything that had any relevance.

But what a throwaway comment it was! "Really?" Cal asked, lighting up a little with a crooked grin. "I actually just spent the summer in Turkey. My family lived there before moving to America. It was amazing."

His enthusiasm was totally adorable, and Rose couldn't help smiling back. "That's cool," she agreed. "Probably not as weird as here though. Which - might be a good thing, huh."

"I don't know," Cal said. "This place is weird, sure, but there's a lot of weird things out there in the real world, too. It's just more subtle about it out there."

Which, yeah, okay, she couldn't argue that given where she came from, but now Rose was curious. "Like what d'you mean?"

"Like, just, you know," Cal said, rubbing his nose a little, "things are weird. Coincidences are weird. Life throws things at you that are pretty weird."

He was trying to work out an example that didn't go into the Big One.

"Okay, how's this? I ran away from home when I was fourteen, went to California. Had some pretty weird, unreal adventures there, too. But while I was gone, my father gets this call from someone saying they know where I am and they'll give my dad the information for a million bucks. Anyway, Dad tries to stiff the guy and catch him, which leads to this high speed chase through Detroit, and the guy ends up being my uncle, who's a priest, who's married to my dad's sister but used to be engaged to my mother."
