the roof - monday midday - 9/14

Sep 14, 2009 10:22

Fiona didn't often come up here. For one, despite an uneven temperament, she wasn't much for 'emo'ing. For another, she was usually reasonably comfortable in her room. But today, she'd come up to the roof with her phone and a couple of books and had decided to make a time of it. The wind was actually sort of refreshing and there was something ( Read more... )

Karla hadn't been up on the roof since the last time she and Dinah had gone flying. It was a bit brisk to be down at the beach, but she still wanted some fresh air, so up to the roof she came.

Though, really, the roof's purpose would have been better served had she come up two weeks ago, when she'd been all angsting and emo. As of now, she was in a fairly good mood. It was nice not to have classes on Mondays.

Fiona looked up at the noise and gave Karla a quick wave.

"Hey!"

Karla grinned at Fiona. "Kiss kiss!" she said, coming over to greet Fiona. "I haven't seen you in about one forever. Possibly two. I know, because I have a gift for you, from the last time I went home!"

She blinked. A gift? She shook that off.

"It's seriously been too long. How are you? What are you up to? And you were fantastic in the play."

"Thanks!" Karla said, blushing. "It was a lot of fun. I'm auditioning for the next one, too. Are you?"

She sat down next to Fiona and called in a good-sized package, covered in brown paper and twine. "Open it," she said, grinning brightly up at her friend. "I've been waiting so long to give it to you."

She looked at the package for a moment before smiling.

"I'm not trying out, but I talked to the guy at the theatre in that handwavey sort of way and he said he could use me to help with the crew."

Then she returned to the box, one nail slicing the twine carefully before she started pulling at the brown paper to see what was inside...

"We could definitely use more crew," Karla said, laughing. "I think Zack spent more time running around backstage than he ever has jogging around the island."

Inside the package were two thick, leather-bound books: Kaeleer: A Natural History of the Non-Human Territories and A Most Historical Overview of the Realm of Kaeleer.

"Then I'm glad I joined. Zack's really sweet."

But then her eyes were on the books and she was paging through them quickly and curiously.

"Oh my goodness, thank you, Karla," she said before finally putting one down and grinning at her.

"You're welcome," Karla said, beaming back. "I saw the titles and thought of you immediately. I know you're fond of books like that. And then I saw the illustrations in the natural history and just had to buy it."

The illustrations were beautiful, done in sepia-toned ink with a careful and steady hand.

"I nearly kept it for myself," she teased, "but fortunately, the merchant had another copy in the back."

"I'd have let you borrow it," she said quickly as she started paging through the book to look at the pictures. Her lips twitched, up in little half-smiles as she saw something interesting, down again when there was something terribly unfamiliar that she had to think about.`

"Shall I leave you to your books then?" Karla asked, laughing. She didn't mind at all, really. Karla understood the lure of a new and fascinating book. In fact, she called in her copy of Shakespeare, so if Fiona wanted to say yes, but felt bad, she could see Karla had a book to read, too.

She looked up, blinking a little, and shook her head.

"I read a lot. I don't get to see you much. Tell me about how your trip was? And how you're doing."

"My trip home was...eventful," Karla said, grimacing a bit. "Politics and everything. My best friend had to stop the sun to get people to see reason."

See how casually she said that? It barely freaked her out anymore! Ish.

"But we got a new art instructor and that was nice," she offered. "Dujae! He was a great artist when he died and only got better afterwards. He's much nicer than that bottom-licking toad he replaced."

Considering some of the things her brother had done to accomplish things, stopping the sun didn't get as much of a blink as it should have.

"That sounds... annoying. The dumb people thing, not the art instructor. Is Dujae teaching here or is that back home?"

That was because Eliot was awesome

"Back home. The coven and the boyos are staying at the Hall for awhile, so Dujae is teaching them while they're there. Though I supposed he'll probably also keep teaching Jaenelle when they go." Karla sounded a little sad, yes. She loved Fandom, but she loved Kaeleer more.

She could hear it.
