Main Campfire; Sunday Evening

Jul 12, 2009 20:37

Penelope sat before the fire but her attention was on the Dreamer. He was seated not far from her, his smile faint, secretive; the same smile he's been giving her since she woke up to him yesterday morning.

She glanced back at the marshmallow she was roasting, not giving it much attention. It was hard to pay attention to anything else with him ( Read more... )

Turtle had been slacking off on campfire duty, so she definitely swung by the main one when she saw one going on her way back from fight club.

"Hey, everyone!" she greeted the crowd as a whole. "So who's got stuff changed into people?"

"Hey, Turtle," Penelope gave her a small wave. "Um. I did?" And she looked over at the Dreamer whose dark eyes slid from her, to Turtle.

Turtle followed Penelope's eyes toward the dark eyes, then looked back at Penelope, went to look back at her stuff-turned-person, but then shook her head and looked back at Penelope.

"Holy crap, your nose," she said, succinctly.

The Dreamer smiled slowly at Turtle. Penelope liked her so he did as well.

"I know," she said, grinning. "It's real. I promise."

"Plastic surgery?" she guessed.

"What? Oh, no... no not at all," she explained, understanding that it was an easy, if not explainable assumption. "I broke the curse, Turtle." Did Turtle know about the curse? "Me. I did it."

"What, with like a spell or something?"

She nodded and glanced at the fire. "Since birth. I was cursed with the nose and ears of a pig. Certain things had to, um, take place for the curse to be broken." Crap. She burnt another marshmallow. "Anyway, these things didn't have to happen because I realized I had it in me all along to break it myself."

It sounded far fetched, she knew. Especially now when there was no more pig nose.

"So....kind of like in meta for Wizard of Oz where the Good Witch goes and tells her that, hey, guess what? You didn't have to go through that at all, you could have gone home alll along if you'd have just clicked your damn heels together?"

Turtle always thought that was kind of a jerkface move on part of the Good Witch. What a manipulative ho-bag.

"Yes, exactly," she said, actually having seen that movie recently. Had she seen it any earlier in life, it might would have clued her in where her mother deceptively clued her out.

Possibly. Either way it didn't matter now. She wasn't going to get that pig nose back. Ever.

"So now? I guess I have to undo the way I was raised and trying to match my normal nose with a normal personality."

"Isn't it weird, though?" Turtle asked. "I mean, because it's so different. Although, really, when I lost my braid, I had some moments where I was really sad about it, but then I just felt really good having it gone. And I even liked my braid, so that probably makes a difference, too."

"There are times," she admitted, quietly, "that I miss it. It was me for so long, but it made my life... so lonely." She shook her head, her dark curls falling about her face. "I like my nose now. Better. It's me. I'm confused though; how did you lose your braid? Your hair is your own, after all."

"It's really cute, Penelope," Turtle offered with a smile. "The nose, I mean. You were cute before, too, but this is definitely nice. And, well, it was practically forever ago, but I had this big attachment to my hair. Complete kid stuff, but, like I said, forever ago. I always had to wear it in a braid, and if anyone touched, they better watch out. And then one night someone snuck into one of the cabins and just chopped it right off. I was a mess after that, but it's just hair, so it was pretty childish."

"Thank you, Turtle, really. It means something, for you to say that," she said, smiling. Her eyes went wide at the telling of her story. "Oh that's terrible! Who would be so cruel as to do something so... so... mean?" She didn't think it childish at all and would feel just about the same way did someone sneakily cut off her hair.

"Oh, you know," Turtle waved a dismissive hand. "It's water under the bridge now. Ages ago..."

Pause.

"Annettehargroveandjohnsheppard."

Cough.

The water under the bridge must be slowly trickling by. Penelope didn't at all smirk because the last name surprised her.

"I don't know the girl but John Sheppard? As in the one that just recently gratuated?" He seemed so nice.
