2nd Floor Common Room, Wednesday Afternoon

Karla was feeling Crafty today--though, admittedly, this was not exactly news. Karla was often in that kind of mood, regardless of whether the 'C' was capitalized or not. After the Magical Reserves meeting today, she'd decided it was a good day to stock up on some items for the Support Reserves. Magical potions unfortunately lost efficacy after a ( Read more... )

Ender wasn't in any mood to overthink his fight with Ben right now, and that made sticking to his own room all the more sensible. However, when he'd passed through the hallways, he'd gotten a sense of a familiar person being there - and ducking his head into the common room, he found her pottering about.

"Busy?"

Karla looked up. "Hi Ender," she called, waving at him. The spoon she'd been using to stir kept going in lazy clockwise circles. "I am, but we can still talk. How are you enjoying rehearsals?"

[Bah! SP=love!]

"It's been interesting so far," he replied, moving into the room now that the invitation had been laid down. "You seemed to have your own take."

"True. However, I'd prefer it if next time, it didn't involve me falling on my ass. I think I broke my dignity." She glanced up and smiled at him, inviting him to come nearer and talk more if he liked. If he were interested in herbs, she might show him a few things as a thank you for introducing her to Wikipedia.

"I don't know if dignity is that easily broken," Ender said, smiling back slightly as he did approach. It wasn't so much the herbs themselves he was interested in, as her interest in the herbs and the culture they came from, but the difference was pretty much moot at this point. "Just keep your head held high as you walk away."

"My dignity's been under constant stress since I got here," she reminded him wryly. "That fall might have been the sheaf that broke the plowhorse's back. I still don't knwo what happened to my Craft! That's what frustrates me the most, actually."

"It could've just been Fandom," Ender returned, equally wryly. "It does have a tendency to take people down a peg when necessary."

"Hey! What's that supposed to mean?" She stuck her tongue out at Ender. "I've been good since I've been here!"

"Maybe by your reality's standards," Ender said, with a vague little grin. "At least it wasn't a gremlin bite. Ben tends to attract them."

Karla frowned. "What do you mean? And not about Ben?" she asked, puzzled.

"About gremlins, or about different cultural standards?"

"Cultural standard pleased," she sighed. "I've been warned about the gremlins."

"I think that one's fairly obvious," he said, glancing at the herbs she'd been working with. "You've got a cultural background - that means you have different ideas about wrong and right than the average person in this century and this country, nevermind the amount of cultures that pass through Fandom on a regular basis."

He shrugged. "Who knows what the island judges as 'being on good behaviour', if you can ascribe sentience to it at all."

"So, this wasn't a comment on whether or not I pass muster according to this cultural standard, but a warning that the island can decide to sanction me at any time according whatever set of guidelines it chooses? Again, assuming sentience and all?" Karla laughed a little. "That's both slightly reassuring and also rather ominous. Thank you Ender, I'm not going to ascribe every negative incident to the island telling me to watch myself. Paranoia City, here I come."

"Ender..." she said a moment later, a bit hestitantly. "Have you talked to Ben lately?"

"It's just a theory popular across the island," he said, sounding a little amused. "I'm in no position to judge whether you pass muster."

After a moment, he added, "Not since last Monday."

When Ben had walked out on him.

"Would he be angered if you were to give me his number? I wish to apologize" Karla grumpyfaced at the word "for last week. But I only see him by chance. And with apologizing, I'd rather just do it and get it over with."

She gave Ender an appreciative smile. "Thanks for distracting me with the internet last week so I don't owe you one."
