Shilo followed the smell of cooking sausages pretty much the entire way from the drama class to the fire. She hoped that this wasn't a cabin-only cookout, since she didn't recognize the guy who was manning the fire.
He smiled and Makejoy wagged her tail happily at the new arrival, but a subtly spread hand near the dog made sure she stayed put and did not go for scritchings just yet.
"All different kinds. Some are chicken, some are pork, some are beef. If you look on the sticks, I wrapped tape around. The red ones are beef, the yellow chicken, the pork blue. The chicken one is a bit sweet but they're all good."
He leaned down to ruffle Makejoy's fur.
"Would you prefer she stayed away from you? She's well trained and very friendly, but she can stay here if you like."
"I'm Shilo. It's nice to meet you both." She decided on a beef sausage, taking a stick with red tape on it. After a nibble, she said, "Is cooking a hobby of yours?"
"I tend to cook more often than I eat, as I've noticed that dealing with people is easier once you've fed them. I never really got to meet many people growing up."
"I can relate- to the not meeting a lot of people part, I mean," Shilo replied, reaching for a jar of lemonade. "I was sick for a long time, and my father was very, very protective of me."
She took a careful sip from the lemonade. "This is all very good, Liir. Thank you again."
"I've been warned already of the things that can occur. I appreciate the warning, though." She looked from the last bite of sausage she had to Makejoy. "Could she... I mean, may I let her have this?"
Makejoy trotted out, slow and careful as she made her way over to Shilo. She settled a reasonable distance from the girl and sat very properly, lolling her tongue and letting her tail blur behind her.
Yes, of course she did. Scritching would also be nice.
"Hi," she said.

"Hello. Care for some lunch?"
He gestured to the sticks.
"They're all open."

He slid down off the log and crossed his legs, using the log for a backboard instead.
"I'm sorry, but I don't think we've met. My name is Liir, and this is Makejoy."

He tipped his head behind himself.
"I've got some drinks as well."
Jars of lemonade.

He grabbed one himself, unscrewed the top, and took a sip.
"Sick? Are you better now?"

"Then you might want to be careful if something comes up around here. Generally, the dorms is a safe place to go."
