Main Campfire, Monday Evening

May 11, 2009 16:43

Since his first class was tomorrow, Alex decided to venture out of his cabins (seriously, CABINS) to the main campfire. He almost expected some counselor to already be there, guitar in hand, asking him to sing Kumbaya. Mercifully, the main campfire was devoid of anything but a few logs and the actual fire ( Read more... )

Fire was good.

Fiona's day had been a mix of good and bad, a first day among first days. Her first class had been very instructional, her time at the salle had been... interesting. Then there'd been shopping.

Feeling a little like an overstimulated lab rat, she settled on one of the logs and wrapped her arms around herself to just watch the flames and digest. There was a glance at the other person there, but mostly just to let him know she knew he was there.

Alex could do cursory glances. He was a pro at them. So, he glanced over at Fiona before looking away and picking up the pack of cigarettes and opening them.

He still wasn't singing Kumbaya.

She looked at the cigarettes for a moment before slightly changing her position on the logs.

"Upwind," was all she said.

"Hmm?" He'd heard her, he just wasn't going to listen. "What was that?"

"I just moved so I would be upwind," she said, looking over at him. In some ways, she was reminded a little of Robert. In others, not at all. Or maybe he was just on her mind. That was probably it.

"That's all."

"Right." And he hadn't lit one. Someone was a little twitchy. "Guessing you don't want one."

She considered it for a moment before quirking her lips to one side to consider the matter.

"I don't know. I've never tried it. Maybe. Would you share one?"

"Maybe." He shrugged a shoulder and leaned back against the log. "It's a bad habit. Probably better that you don't start. Hacking coughs are unattractive on chicks."

She lifted her head.

"Then why are you doing it?" she challenged. Her heart wasn't really in it and she wasn't trying to sound 'smart'. She just wanted to know.

"Well, technically, I'm not." He was just fiddling with the pack right now.

"So you just bought that pack of cigarettes as a prop?"

She didn't quite believe that.

"Yeah, I'm gonna build a fort with them," he said dryly. "They'll make a good foundation."

"So you have heard of sarcasm?" she said pointedly.

"Amazing, isn't it?" he said, pulling a cigarette out and lighting it. "And see, now I'm smoking. See the difference?"

"Aren't you impressive?" she said with a flat tone. Her lips, however, were crooked at the ends in a smirk.

"You could" and she thought back to how Dinah had put it earlier "sell tickets."

"Right, give the little people a thrill while they watch me smoke a cigarette." He nodded. "They couldn't afford me."
