The Deck, early evening Thursday

Apr 23, 2009 12:12

Dinah had hamburgers and hot dogs, some veggie platters and chips and dip, soft drinks and cake. Oh, and ice cream in the fridge inside for later.

Happy birthday, Will Shakespeare! Oh, and her too.

Sing happy birthday to her or introduce yourself if she has no idea who you are.

Although she'll probably guess who Emmett is. Because hi, TALL.

"Dinah. I hear it's the day of your birth," Arthur greeted, his stance breathing seven ways of formal.

"Hey, Arthur. Yup! Seventeen today." Dinah noted the formal, blinking a little.

Jeez, some days Arthur made her wish she wore a uniform or something.

It was that, or give in to his baser impulses and mock the hell out of her, and that didn't seem appropriate. So Princely it was. "Then I wish you many more," he offered, "And that your celebration goes well."

Wow, that was... polite! Oh my god! It really was her birthday! "Thanks! I'm glad you could make it." That was hostess-y enough. "Are you done with Exams yet? Or can you go off and party hard tonight?"

"I still have a 'final' in the morning," he said. Sure, this was miles off from the way they generally interacted, but he could be trusted to behave.

You know, when he felt the situation needed it. "But I think I'll live."

"Same here. Still, a lot of people have to be done already." Dinah grinned at the sarcasm and said, "So, not a life-threatening Final then? Just a mildly-likely-to-injure one?"

"I think the only one who has to fear any injury is Sir Minsc," Arthur said, lapsing for a moment there. "I'll slay the final yet."

Dinah snickered, and said, "If he wants extra proof what a great lion you were, you can have my ex-boots to show him." She grinned, bouncing on her toes a little. "And then a week and change before there are new people to explain things to! I won't be the newest newbie on the Island any more!" That ought to scare him a little.

"Oh, don't worry, Dinah," Arthur said, politely. Very, very politely. "There will always be a place for you."

State visits got really boring. You learned how to sound flattering when you were really being an asshole.

Dinah stuck out her tongue at him. Not having any diplomatic aspirations meant she could do that when he was being dead-pan snarky at her expense.

"And your place will be what it's always been." She smiled back extra bright at him.

See, you picked up nuances when someone taught you fencing. Even if they were clumsy counters.

"So it will be," said Arthur, pleasantly taking that in stride. Smugly. "Have a good day, Dinah." He had food to eat.

Ordering squirrels to get you more rum.

See? She didn't even say that out loud! She could be good too! Note to self: work in extra smug for the bits with the declarations of war.

"Thanks! And I will!"

And the squirrels, Arthur could have pointed out, also did bring him more rum, as was their place in the world. He nodded at her curtly, then made an impressive spin on his heel of the kinds only he could manage, and stalked towards the food.

"Diiiiiiiiinaaaaaaah!" Priestly tried for a sneak-attack hug. While yelling.

He was slightly hyper.

"Happy birthday!"
