Third Floor Common Room, Saturday Morning

Mar 14, 2009 13:04

It was morning, and morning meant breakfast! And there weren't enough adults around to feed them, and Warren needed food. So he was gonna make some, 'cause he liked cooking anyhow! Anemone and him were going to make pancakes, and cereal, and scrambled eggs, and... Well. Mostly pancakes ( Read more... )

A small blond girl walked into the common room wide-eyed. She was dragging a fuzzy pink teddy bear behind her.

"I'm hungry," she complained.

"We're cooking," Warren noted, "kinda!"

They were totally kinda cooking. Mostly, it involved squeezing chocolate syrup on things.

"The cereal's ready, though. But it was boring to make."

Because it didn't involve actual cooking. Stupid cereal.

"Is it fun?" she asked hesitantly, leaning forward (but being careful to keep her bear close so as not to get chocolate syrup on it).

"Yep! Anemone has chocolate syrup, and we're gonna make a laser robot pancake! Which is awesome." On the off chance that she couldn't tell that it was awesome on her own, of course.

"Really?" She looked up at him with big eyes. "Can I help?"

"Yep!" Warren reached for a bowl and a carton of eggs. "We need to break these into the bowl for the batter, 'cause that's how pancakes are made. You wanna do that?"

Triela nodded hesitantly and held out one hand. Because, obviously, she had to keep one hand for holding her bear.

And into her hand went an egg!

"You crack it on the side of the bowl, and then dump the guts in," he explained. Because that was totally what the insides of eggs were, to little boys. "And then we beat it all up!"

She tapped the egg softly against the edge of the bowl. Very softly. The eggshell didn't crack.

She frowned at it.

"No, no, no," Warren said with a shake of his head and a click of his tongue. "You have to do it harder, because eggs don't like being broken unless you drop them and throw them and stuff. Like this!"

He demonstrated with an egg of his own. It broke! There were shells in the bowl, but it broke!

"Oh," she said in understanding. Then she swung the egg against the bowl's edge slightly harder. A small dent appeared on it, but that was it. "It's not working," she whined.

"Do it again, in the same spot! Sometimes you gotta hit it a few times to make it work right!" He took another egg and tapped it a few times. A little lighter than he usually would, so that she wouldn't feel all... disappointed or something.

He hated it when little girls started to cry.

She hit the egg against the bowl again. And again. And again. On the fifth hit it cracked enough for some of the white to start oozing through.

"Like that?"

"Like that," Warren agreed with a little nod. "And then you pull the two sides apart so the guts fall in the bowl."

Triela stared at the egg in consternation. How was she supposed to pull it apart with only one hand?

Warren? Also staring at the egg. Hm.

"I can hold your teddy bear," he offered. Never mind that his own hands were coated in pancake goo as it was.
