Luke still didn't really know where he was, and the Seavers hadn't picked up when he called. He should have known better than to be taken in by all the "Luke, we're your family now" stuff, right? Dumb. And this place seemed to be strange, but a little better than the streets ( Read more... )

"Hi," Jeff said, without any real introduction or noise to make it clear that he'd just shown up. "Have you seen my girlfriend? She's about this tall," he held up his hand at a random height, "Dark hair, might be shouting something about naughty boys?"

"I haven't seen anybody since I woke up today, man," Luke said with a quick smile. "Sorry. Have a sandwich!"

Yes, that was his solution to everything.

"How come she's shouting about naughty boys?"

"It's a weekend," Jeff said, and shrugged. That was his answer to everything.

He did take a sandwich, though. "Thanks."

"No problem, I made plenty," Luke said dismissively. "... a weekend?"

"One of those weekends where the island gets a bit bored," Jeff explained, chewing down on his sandwich. He looked at Luke with a squint. "...I think I may know you," he said, "But I really have a horrible time memorizing bloke's faces."

"The girl at the clinic yesterday said I looked a little like somebody with some fancy-ass name," Luke supplied helpfully. "I'm Luke, though. I just got here from Long Island."

"Hi, Luke," Jeff said. He continued to chew on his sandwich. It was a good sandwich. "Welcome to Fandom Island. I can't stay long 'cos of my girlfriend, though, she's going to be quite cross when the weekend is over."

He paused.

"I may have to move rooms for a few days," he said, thoughtfully.

"Bummer," Luke said. He had lived with Carol, he knew cross girls. "She's gonna kick you out?"

"No," Jeff said, shaking his head, "I just make it a point not to go near women when they're cross. They're allowed to slap you. Or, in Turtle's case, kick you in the shins."

He pointed at his shins.

"But those are all bony!" Luke was indignant. "And you can't hit her back, 'cause she's a girl. Man. Almost makes me glad I don't have a girlfriend."

"Girlfriends have their advantages, though," Jeff said, wisely, "Many of them damp."

"Damp? Like, swimming?"

Poor, poor Luke.

"Not really," Jeff said, grinning a bit before he caught himself. "Er. So if you see Turtle, or whatever she's calling herself, please let me know. It's absolutely vital."

No, Jeff hadn't given anyone much of a description to go on.

"Absolutely," Luke promised, still puzzling over the "damp" thing. "Where can I find you?"

"Room 513," Jeff said, pointing helpfully. "As for the dampness, it's really not like swimming at all. That's too damp."

Luke nodded what he hoped looked like a confident nod. "Right. Thanks."

He'd be thinking about dampness and girls all day.
