The Roof; Sunday Evening.

Jun 15, 2008 18:55

Cal had never seen anything like this sky before in his life; he'd be damned if he didn't appreciate it. From the height of the dormitory's rooftop, the view was even better, and it also added a bit of consolation in the theory that, perhaps, if anything did erupt, he was at a bit of a high ground, even if he was pretty sure lava could manage to ( Read more... )

Isabel figured the roof would have the best view of the volcano, so she made her way up there with her camera and a blanket.

Cal was starting to feel like he shouldn't be surprised that he was the only one to think about this vantage spot. He lifted his head in greeting to the girl. "Hey. Welcome to the party."

"Apparently yeah," Isabel smiled. "I figured this would be the spot with the best view. Looks like everyone else thought that as well."

"Best view and higher ground," Cal pointed out with a slight ghost of a smile.

"I'm not sure the higher ground will matter if that things goes BOOM with any sort of force," she said. "But at least it would be quick. Personally though, I worry less about eruptions and more about some weird lava creature crawling out of the crater and coming over and invading."

"...Higher ground could be helpful against invading lava creatures," Cal pointed out after a moment to consider all of that.

"Point," Isabel nodded. "Hopefully that won't be an issue. And instead we'll just have what's essentially a nice fireworks show."

"...Nice?" Cal asked, arching an eyebrow at the girl, because, hello, understatement.

"I was attempting to be low-key and cool," she laughed. "Forget nice. Awesome and amazing and overwhelming are probably better words."

"I can respect wanting low-key and cool," Cal commented with a grin, "but some things, you just shouldn't even bother."

He told himself that it couldn't possibly have anything to do with him personally, but that a girl would want to seem low-key and cool in the general vacinity of him, even, was enough to bring the grin up a notch. And he knew he shouldn't even bother entertaining those kinds of thoughts anyway, but he couldn't help it and he found himself tilting his head thoughtfully at her to ask, "Have we met? I'm Cal, if we haven't."

"Yup. This is one of the times to let the inner dork out."

Isabel shook her head, "I don't think we have. It's nice to meet you Cal. I'm Isabel, belatedly welcoming you to Fandom."

"Thanks for the belated welcome," Cal grinned with a little bit of a nod. "I gotta say; I like it here. Don't think I'd get the chance to see something like this anywhere else."

"Fandom's pretty cool," she smiled. "I decided that long before we set off on the world tour. Stick around here long enough and exploding volcanoes won't be the only surprising thing you'll see."

"Yeah, yeah, yeah," Cal grinned a little as he rolled his eyes. "I heard that enough my first week here. Trust me, definitely well past the point of needing to be reminded of that."

At least he was taking being constantly reminded by people who have been on this island longer better by now.

"I'm sure you did," Isabel said, unable to prevent a small laugh. "Some people, and I'll admit, occasionally I've been one of them, like to try and break the brains of the newbies. It's not malicious. It's just for fun. I mean seriously did you ever expect a moving island? Or half the other weird stuff that's happened since you got here?"

"Expect it?" Cal asked, and shook his head. "No. Accept it, though, yes, and quite easily, but, before I came here, life threw me a lot of curve balls. Nothing quite..." He almost said as big but stopped himself, since that was hardly true, "...like some of this stuff, but I learned a long time ago to go with the flow of certain things, unless you want to set yourself up for things being way more difficult than they need to be."
