Camp gym, Friday afternoon

May 23, 2008 13:01

Jaina had been pretty dedicated in her training for a while now, but she had to admit that she'd stepped it up since getting to the cabins. Every day she seemed to be doing something, whether it be in the gym or salle or the flight shed. Maybe she was just working out frustrations or something ( Read more... )

Convinced to not let himself slack off this weekend like he did last weekend, but having at least enjoyed sleeping in like he figured any normal teenager should on a day without workshops, Cal dragged himself into the gym eventually. Since someone was already there, he decided to skip the warm up of forms for the sake of saving himself the embarrassment, and headed straight toward the weights. He wasn't too terribly surprised that the person already there was that Jaina girl, though, and he greeted her with a lift of his chin, and, hey. Even a lift of his hand, too, before taking to the bench.

"I beat you today, huh?" Jaina greeted him. And realized she must probably look like a really violent person, with all he saw her hitting this bag.

"Today, maybe," Cal agreed with a slight grin as he wiped his hands together, and then down his shirt of a moment before lying down and taking a hold of the bar. He shifted a little, feet finding a good base, before grunting and lifting it off its holds. "I'm still at least one up on you."

Then he started a slow, steady rep, light weight, to warm up with; since there wasn't much strain in the lifting, his focus was trying to go mostly into making clean, precise movement. Trying. He was distracted by principle alone.

"Don't put it past me to me up at 0400 to beat you here," she said, still working the bag.

"Aww," Cal smirked a little at his weight bar, "you'd do that just for me? I'm flattered."

"You underestimate my egregious competetiveness," she explained, stopping long enough to get a breath. The smart thing would have been to bring a water bottle or something, but she really wouldn't have those in a real situation, so she'd do without.

"Probably because I have so little of it myself," Cal admitted. "Especially if it involves four a.m. In that case, you can have it, even though I'm starting to think that's what it would take to get this place to yourself for five minutes."

"Depends on when and where you go. The earlier and later, the less people tend to show," Jaina said, starting up the hitting again. "And the gym tends to be busy. I think we have an unusual amount of the athletic type."

"Yeah, but every school does have its jocks." Cal said it in a way that made it clear that, even though he was in here on a regular basis, he certainly wouldn't be counted among them, and he wondered whether or not he'd admit to her that his efforts were entirely for the sake of vanity if it came around to that. If anything, though, he'd assume his body type and the fact that it was what it was even with him here all the time would probably tell her as much anyway.

Despite not being from here, Jaina had a very easy time fitting in and not needing to wonder what people were talking about, but every once in a while something would get her. "Jocks?"

There was a pause.

"Athletic types," he supplied. "Like you said. Stereotypically the big beefy guys on the football team and the tough girls who could smash your face in with a volleyball serve."

"Oh," she said, shrugging as she hit the bag again. "I don't think we really have any of those. Unless Chad counts."

"Chad?" Cal said, overpronouncing the name with an incredulous mocking tone. "God, you almost can't even get a name that's more jocky than Chad..."

With the exception of Rex Reese. That bastard.

"It's not nice to put too much stock in people's names, you know," she said lightly, thinking of her little brother. "They tend to surprise you that way."

"Hey," Cal would have held out his hands defensively if he wasn't holding a decent amount of weight above his chest. "You don't need to tell me that one twice."

As any glance as his official records would prove.

"I'm just saying, that's pretty stereotypical jock name."

"I'll take your word for it," she decided. "I think we only actually have two teams here, even." And her boyfriend was on both of those. Now she was wondering if he qualified as a jock.
