Andrew quietly wandered into the gym. He stayed half-hidden behind the bleachers, but clapped lightly and smiled every time John did something silly.

"ANDREW!" John nearly bounced on his friend when he spotted him. "Come play with me!"

Andrew shook his head rapidly. There were a lot of kids in the gym, and he didn't want to be in the middle of all that.

"We're playing football an' I get to be quarterback!" John enthused. "You could be the ref!"

There was more head shaking, and Andrew took a step closer to the bleachers and wrapped his arm around a poll there to indicate that he really wasn't comfortable with the idea of leaving that spot. Besides, he didn't know was a ref was, and was pretty sure he would get hurt if he tried to be one.

"Wanna tell scary stories while we hide under the bleachers from the other kids?" John offered. "I know good ones!"

He nodded this time, smiling and dropping down to crawl under the bleaches.

John grinned broadly as he followed the boy under the bleachers. He liked telling stories with Andrew. "You start!"

Andrew leaned back against a support and thought it over, his bottom lip sticking out in concentration.

Finally, he leaned forward and said in his very small voice, "It was dark?" He waited to see if John would approve of his start to the story.

"Ooooh!" John said, eyes growing wide. "It was! An' there was a big- no, gimungous spider hidin' in the dark!"

Andrew nodded in encouragement. Spiders were very scary.

He glanced towards the dark corner under the bleachers and inched slightly closer to John.

John whispered, "It won't get you here. It's just pretend." Then he continued composing his story. "An' there's a hero an' his sidekick. They gotta save the princess from the spider!"

Andrew clapped and bounced a little. "Sidekick," he said as he pointed to himself.

He wondered what the princess was like and if the hero would have to kiss her. His face scrunched up at that unpleasant thought.
