Dec 14, 2007 21:29

It was a nice enough morning that Karal went down to the stables early, so he'd have time to take Trenor out to graze before opening the library ( Read more... )

It was early. Chris figured it would be safe for him to run into town to buy Lana flowers before anyone else was awake and out.

When he saw Karal and a horse, he involuntarily shuddered. It was probably a very good thing he and Johnny hadn't actually found horses the other day.

He tried to sneak past without being spotted.

Trenor snorted, ears pointing hopefully at the new person, because new people could often be persuaded to give him treats. It caught Karal's attention, and he looked over and smiled. "Good morning, Chris."

No, he hadn't listened to the radio. He did wonder why Chris seemed to be sneaking, though.

Crap.

Chris forced a smile. "Morning, Karal. You're up early."

"I wanted to take Trenor out before the library," he explained, shortening the lead and walking over. Trenor stretched his nose out towards Chris. "Is everything all right? You seem a bit...unsettled."

Chris unconsciously took a step back from Trenor. "I'm... okay," he said. "Been a weird couple of days."

Which was an understatement of epic proportions.

Trenor's ears drooped and he dropped his head to nose the grass sadly. Karal rolled his eyes at the horse's theatrics and scratched his neck. "Silly horse," he said affectionately, then considered Chris. "Anything I can help with?"

"I doubt it," Chris said. "Unless you can make everyone forget something that happened."

"No," he said slowly, leaning against Trenor's shoulder. "No, I've no way to do that. It can't have been so bad as that, though, surely?"

"It was pretty bad," he confirmed. "I guess you didn't hear about it? I'm pretty sure it made radio on Wednesday. Something... weird... happened to me and Johnny Storm. We, uh... thought we were other people."

Karal winced. "I didn't, no," he said. "Gremlin, body swap, or utter randomness?" And he couldn't believe the options just rolled off his tongue that way. Maybe he'd been here too long.

"I'm... actually not sure?" Chris admitted. "Johnny and I were in my room, trying to plan a double date and the next thing we knew, we thought were cowboys who couldn't find our herd."

He had to turn his head away to hide a smile, concentrating on setting Trenor's mane straight. "Cowboys?" he said. "I'm certain there's no cattle on the island. You must have been very confused."

"Confused is a good word," he agreed. "We spent most of the time looking for our cows."

He bit his lip. "And apparently pining for each other."

"Oh, glory," he said, going pink around the ears. "That, well, must have been disturbing." Karal blinked, then hesitantly added, "You don't, do you? I mean, normally."

"No, not one little bit," Chris said hastily. "I mean, we don't hate each other anymore, but we both have girlfriends. So, yes, very, very disturbing."

Karal was nodding. "And I thought being in someone else's body was bad," he said under his breath. There was absolutely no delicate way to ask what he wanted to, so he didn't. "Do your girlfriends know about the weirdness, or will you have to explain?" He had to start listening to the radio more often.
