The grounds: Friday morning [before classes]

It was a nice enough morning that Karal went down to the stables early, so he'd have time to take Trenor out to graze before opening the library ( Read more... )

There was a Jeff here.

And where there was a Jeff, this early in the morning, there was also a Nana. Attached to a leash, and not particularly caring much about it. Which is to say that it wasn't so much Jeff walking Nana as Jeff getting dragged by Nana.

And then she paused.

It was that... thing.

Trenor saw her and his head shot up, ears pricked forward. He took one step towards her and stopped, torn between playing with the hairy thing and staying with Karal.

He pawed the ground, prompting Karal to look at him in surprise, then jerked his head, flicking the lead rope out of Karal's hand, and leapt happily towards the hairy thing.

He felt as guilty as a horse could, knew he was being a Bad Horse, but it was just too much fun!

"Trenor!" Karal gaped after his horse, frozen in shock.

And that would be the point where Jeff's arm was nearly wrenched out of place as Nana went from straining the leash forwards to straining it backwards, scrambling away in a manner befitting of a particularly scared housecat.

"NANA!"

In the process, she completely floored Jeff, who hit the ground hard, was dragged along several feet, and then let go of the leash, which skittered over the ground after the panicking dog.

"NANA! COME BACK! THIS IS NO TIME TO REPORT TO SPY TANK COMMAND!"

"TRENOR, WHOA!" Karal called after him with little hope as he ran over to Jeff.

Trenor whickered and sped up to a canter, following after his playmate, careful not to get to close as he bounced along after her. Karal he ignored completely.

"Spy tank command?" he asked Jeff as crouched next to him.

Nana ran away. She ran away, ran away. Occasionally she would pause and bark, but mostly, it was the running away that seemed like her best bet.

On the ground, Jeff pushed himself up. A little. Athletic, he was not. "Well," he said, "She's an evil spy tank, there ought to be a command somewhere. I just haven't found it yet."

Trenor cantered after her happily, tossing his head, tail flagged, as he played his Favourite Game Ever.

Karal watched them get farther away, shocked that his horse had behaved so badly, then offered Jeff a hand up, impatient to go after Trenor. "Sunlord, I hope it's on the island somewhere, otherwise finding them is going to prove difficult."

Jeff was more than pleased to use Karal's hand to wrench himself up.

He ran a hand through over his hair, and came up dirt. "I think I've turned into a sand monster," he said, sadly. He stared after the pets for a moment. "I imagine she'll be sleeping in front of my door again tonight." Pause. "Oh god. I'm an insomniac sand monster!"

"...insomniac sand monster?" He stared, something he seemed to do whenever he encountered Jeff, then shook his head. "You're an insomniac sand monster without a dog, and I'm a priest without a horse, and neither of these are good things! Come on, we must go after them!"

"I've got sand in my hair and Nana's about to lock me out of my room again," Jeff pointed out, soberly, "It's sort of hard to avoid in that set of circumstances." He had a lot of experience in this area.

He stared after the pets more. "They'll come back."

Karal bit his lip, shifting from foot to foot, knowing he couldn't catch up with Trenor, but worrying he'd get the lead rope tangled, or trip, or eat the possibly-a-demon dog and colic. "You could shower," he suggested. "Which would remove the sand, and, wait -- why can't you simply step over her?"

A loud neigh sounded from somewhere in the distance.

Followed quickly by loud, enthusiastic, and panicky barking. Nana had a voice on her.

"She bites me," Jeff said, sagging.

"She bites you? Are you certain she's not a demon of some kind?" Maybe Trenor had been trying to protect him.

"I'm fairly certain she's just an ordinary Saint Bernard," Jeff said, helplessly, "Who also happens to be an evil spy tank."

"I'll buy you a muzzle for her as a Christmas present," he decided, folding his arms and staring after their animals. "She's lured off my horse!"

"Technically speaking," Jeff offered, in an occupation sort of way, "Your horse chased off my dog."

"She ran off first," he pointed out with a frown. "But, glory, Trenor knows better than to give chase! I can't imagine what could have gotten into him!"

There was a clatter of hooves, and Karal caught a brief flash of chestnut as Trenor briefly came into view.
