Outside the dorms: Thursday morning

Aug 09, 2007 18:53

Trenor was a very good horse, obedient and well-behaved, but he was also bored, tired of being stuck in the stable, and missing Karal. After several days of fidgeting, he finally worked out how to lift the latch on his stall door, and that would be why there was currently a horse in front of the dorms ( Read more... )

Faile was just heading out for a walk when she saw the horse grazing on the lawn. Her eyes lit up and she began to walk towards it carefully.

"Hello there," she said in a calming voice.

Trenor lifted his head and watched her approach, ears flicking forward and back, contemplating the possibility that she might have a treat. He was also contemplating the possibility that she might try and take him back to the stable.

He really didn't want that, so he was ready to bolt if she tried to catch him.

Faile watched the horse's ears twitch and slowed down even more. "You are a lovely horse," she said in the same low tone of voice. "Where do you belong?"

When she got within about two arms length of him, she stopped and put her hands in her back pockets. The horse was obviously twitchy and she didn't want to startle him into running. "Good horse. I'm just going to stand right here."

Relaxing when she stopped, his ears swivelled forward to point at her, and he stretched out his neck. Possibly she had a treat in the hands he couldn't see?

He took one cautious step forward.

"Good horse," Faile said soothingly, not moving. "I won't hurt you. I'd just like to pet you."

She had a nice voice. After a moment's hesitation, Trenor bobbed his head and started to walk closer, pretending to graze, but really keeping an eye on her. Right until he was practically grazing on her feet.

He lifted his head and looked at her expectantly. She was just standing there, why wasn't she patting him?

Faile laughed when Trenor looked at her like that. She slowly brought one hand forward and stroked his nose. "So, why are you out here all on your own, hmm?"

He nudged at her hand, and lowered his head, blowing out a long breath through his nose. This was good, pats and no trying to grab him. All he needed now was treats.

Faile laughed again and scratched behind his ears. "I do have an oatmeal bar," she told him conversationally as she continued to pat him. "It was going to be for my walk today, but I think I can share with the first horse I've met since I got here."

He pricked his ears forward. Not that he recognised any of those words, but people sort of sounded a certain way when they were offering him food.

"Oh, you are a smart one," Faile said, amused. She pulled the snack bar out of her pocket and began to unwrap it.

Trenor whickered and nudged her hand. He knew about treats coming in wrappers, they were the best kind!

Too excited to remember his manners, he reached out to try and grab the treat out of her hands.

Faile has been watching for that so she quickly hid the bar behind her back. "Behave or no treat," she told his sternly.

His ears drooped, his head fell, and he sighed sadly, looking like a very forlorn horse indeed.

Faile laughed again and finished unwrapping the bar behind her back. She broke off a piece and held it out for Trenor on the flat of her palm. "Poor horse. I bet your owner starves you, right?"

Trenor lipped it up, whiskers just brushing her palm, being very, very careful, as if to make up for his previous bad manners.
