Chupacabra campfire: Tuesday night

May 30, 2007 09:23

He'd been warned about gremlins and monsters and all manner of strangeness. Pity no one had thought to warn Karal about the weather. If they had, he might have done something besides watch in fascination as the snowflake slowly drifted out of the sky and landed on the tip of his nose ( Read more... )

After leaving the Basilisk campfire, Jaina came back to Chupacabra, muttering something about insane people.

"You seem troubled, my friend. Have you come to seek guidance?" he asked, already knowing the answer. Of course she had! "The Sunlord's grace is given to all, even those who do not believe." Up to a certain point, that is, for all should follow Vkandis Sunlord.

"Um, not so much guidance. More avoiding guys asking me to check them for bites," she said.

Karal steepled his fingers together. "I do not believe that you should be inspecting men for bites, or for anything else. It is not seemly. Perhaps that is why you seem troubled, knowing their words were not appropriate." The Writ and the Rule were very clear on what was and was not acceptable for women. A priest of his stature must adhere to them, and educate those who were ignorant of it. "I trust you did not do so?"

"No... Are you feeling okay?" She might have been taking the lack of smile into consideration here.

"I feel very well, though it is kind of you to inquire. But it is you I am concerned with," he said, waving away her question. "It is very good that you did not. Such behaviour is not," he considered how best to put it, given her status as a non-believer, "not healthy for you."

"Healthy," she repeated, not sure where this was going. "Do you mean you expect me to pick up some disease or something?"

"The Sunlord tells us women are to be protected and kept safe, and not take on the habits and guise of men." Okay, this was a different world, but it did not mean he could abdicate his duty to educate the ignorant. He was a very important priest, and with that came certain responsibilities. "Not that I believe you are a demon! But you must take care with yourself, physically and spiritually."

Jaina stared for a moment, finally saying, "I'm not inspecting you for any bites, so you might want to take that on as a cover story. I don't need protecting from anyone, and I don't need to be told to take care of myself."

He drew himself up to his full height, looking very offended. "I was merely attempting to help you, as the Sunlord commands, lest you come to harm," he said, more than a little condescendingly. Normally, a suggestion she inspect him for bites would have had him blushing bright red. Now, he just stared at her. "I certainly would not ask you for any such thing. I, at least, know right from wrong. And for what, exactly, would I require a cover story?"

"Well, if you really knew right from wrong, you wouldn't be talking down to me like you are," she said. "And that is why you would need a cover story."

"Well, if you do not wish to be helped, then there is nothing I can do." Yeah, that tone wasn't getting any less condescending. "But I will pray that Vkandis leads you to wisdom and keeps you safe." Even if she was clearly a heathen, who was completely unable to recognise when someone was simply trying to make her life better.

She was going to blame a gremlin. But for the moment, she wasn't the happiest with him, and she knew to shut up and show some self-restraint.

She rolled her eyes and said, "Yeah. Have fun with that," and got up to go anywhere else.

If he didn't know he was such an important, and therefore infallible, priest, he'd be disappointed in himself for failing. As it was, he was simply disappointed in Jaina.

Thankfully for the sanity of all concerned, he simply nodded and sketched a blessing in the air. "I will be here should you wish further guidance."
