Being inside the cabin means he can't run away should anyway try to tease him. Being outside, at least, means he can try and run away. Still, it's not like either option is good

Karal was concerned, yes, but the sight of Gavin trying to hide in his jacket was quite amusing, and he hid a smile. "Perhaps you could come out of there and tell me what happened?" he suggested. "Just so I know why I'm hiding you?"
He peeked out and then dropped the jacket around his shoulders. "I was some...magician or something with a bad accent. And I think Luke and I were...together."
"Together?" He looked confused, then enlightenment arrived, along with a pink tinge. "Oh! Together. Oh, yes, well, all right," he said fidgeting a little. "And a magician with a bad accent? That truly does not sound like you. Do you know how it happened?"
"We're not together," he said hurriedly. "Luke and I aren't. The people we thought we were might be. I don't know. And...something bit us both yesterday."
Karal nodded, happy to accept the not together explanation and move on. "Something bit you and made you believe you were someone else." That sounded vaguely familiar, and he frowned. "Perhaps it was a gremlin? I've received several warning that they are to be avoided for just that reason."
"What sort of weird things?" he asked, reaching out to pat him on the shoulder once more. "And, truly, if it was because of a gremlin bite, it wasn't your fault you were doing them."
