Application Tips

Every app period (yep, it's that time again) we get quite a few applications. We accept many and reject a few, yes. Let's get one thing clear straight off the bat: we don't look for reasons to reject your app, we look for reasons to accept it. Sometimes there are glaring errors or issues that prevent us from doing so, or maybe your application ( Read more... )

When your character is like, *the* main character of a canon, it's sometimes hard (at least for me) to separate "tell us about your canon" and "tell us about your character", because that character's backstory is so essential to the plot. What I'm asking is basically... is that gonna be a problem, on an app? Or does it not really matter as long as the information is all *there* in some form or another?

Uh. Hopefully that makes sense.

As long as it's all there, you're good! Having apped characters who ARE the focus of their canon (dude, it is HARD writing an app for Harry Potter), the way I usually divvy it up is "here's the plot of the series/movie/book/etc., see how my character is the focus" vs. "here is my character's temperment/appearance/some more clarification on the points previously mentioned." If that makes sense?

But again, as long as all the info is actually there, it can pretty much be shoved into both categories. I would just elaborate on the aspects of the character that will affect how they are in Fandom in the "tell us about your character" section, and add on the appearance/etc.

w00t! And... okay, one more question. If the character has a companion along the lines of, say, Altra- an NPC who clearly has their own distinct personality as well as an ability to communicate with at least *some* of the residents of Fandom, how much of a description should they get? A mini-bio or just something along the lines of "yeah, he's more than just a pet".

Oooh, that's a good question. Generally what we look for is as much information on NPCs like that as possible, and an explanation of why the NPC needs to come to Fandom. So a sort of mini-bio, yes -- here's the NPC, here are their powers and so forth, and here's why they have to come to Fandom with my character.

Generally speaking, it does have to be very important for the actual character to have the NPC accompanying them, so that we don't get overrun with NPCs. We also want to try to avoid having NPCs who could be viable, app-able characters for someone in the future.

For instance, Karal has Altra because in his canon, Altra is pretty much with him ALL THE TIME. They're a package deal and it would actually be OOC to leave him at home. However, if I apped Lucy Pevensie, she couldn't bring Tumnus with her for no actual reason, because he could be played by someone else in the future, and him being her BFF is not a good enough reason to have him come with her.

So, um, rambliness aside, does that make sense?

I can probably help a little more! This is what I actually wrote just for Altra, though he's mentioned throughout Karal's app (and Companions are explained).

And a Firecat is...?

Firecats are a bit like Companions. They are avatars of Vkandis and are said to be reincarnated Sons of the Sun. They are huge, standing thigh high, and look like cream bodied, red-point Siamese cats with intense blue eyes, but they can appear to others as a regular house cat. They speak mind to mind with whomever the choose, have god-given powers, including shielding and the ability to 'jump' (teleport) carrying other people/things over great distances and - at least according to me for the purposes of getting Karal to Fandom - across dimensions when so decreed by Vkandis.

Heck, if it would be of any help, I can post his full app in his LJ - being a fantasy canon and one I love, it was pretty tl;dr and went into a lot of detail.

I would love to read it :D

My app is not from a fantasy canon, but I have a thing I need to figure out how best to explain that is vaguely NPCish, so it would be beneficial to me.

Wow, vague comment is vague. I may poke you on IM if I see you on :D

Hee - and one app, as promised! It's tl;dr but not as tl;dr as my Moist app (which went to like 9 pages *facepalm*).
