A woman of medium height, capped with long, layered, auburn hair stood at the front of the classroom as the students entered. "Ray Kowalski," he said shortly. "I wanna be a cop when I'm older. Figured I should know how to relate to people of all species. Wouldn't wanna accidentally offend someone."

Laura nodded. "Well, Ray, I'll see what I can do to help you out...though it's important to remember that we're still human -- we still make mistakes. Though, hopefully, they don't lead to interstellar incidents." She smiled.

"Anders," he said, then paused. "Samuel Anders, but I just go by my last name, pretty much. I'm in this class because . . . well, I thought it would be a good idea to branch out. Can't be just a dumb jock all my life."

Feeling her breath catch in her throat, Laura gave a quiet ahem. The smile she wore, however, effectively covered any emotional discomfort she felt. "A pleasure to meet you, Anders. I hope you find the class rewarding."

"Thanks. So do I," Anders replied with a grin. "Still not sure how much use an athlete's gonna have for interstellar relations, but maybe if I stay here I can start an interplanetary Pyramid league, or something."

"I'm Cally," she said. "I'm here cause, umm, well, I thought I recognized the name of the teacher as someone from the colonies. And I was right, so, yay!"

"Welcome to the class, Cally." The former president couldn't help the smile that spread across her lips. It really was interesting to see Cally before the pressures of the war got to her, to see her young and enthusiastic again.

Anders leaned over in Cally's direction and saluted with his pencil. "Okay, whippersnapper, you win. Should've made a bet on it, then I'd have to pay up."
