Philosophy of Loss, Friday, 2nd Period

Didi somehow got her classroom warm and cozy despite the lack of electricity, and she had popcorn balls and spiced apple cider out of the students to snack on, but the blackout had still caused some unavoidable changes to her class plans.

"Hey," she said, ruefully glancing to the dead DVD player at the front of the room. "We were going to watch a movie with a ghost story for Halloween, but it looks like that plan's out the window, so I was thinking we could tell scary stories instead. If you don't know any, you can tell one about something you experienced. Or tell a happy story instead. Happy stories are important, too."

She picked up a book off her desk and opened it. "This is a short one that I thought was just terrifying," she said, and began to read. "When I was a child my family moved to a big old two-floor house, with big empty rooms and creaking floorboards...."

When she finished, she smiled. "Your turn."
