Living on the Outskirts, Friday, Period 2

Sep 14, 2012 08:17

Once again, the classroom layout was very much the same as it had been in weeks gone by. Except it was possible that the shadowy corner that Jono had made a point to include was a little smaller, and a little more well-lit. You know. If you squinted a little. Or were the sort to pay attention to the shadowy corners at all, Cade. Jono was sitting up ( Read more... )

Break into partners or small groups and... have a conversation. That's it. Simple.

Do try to keep some of the rules of communication in mind when you do, at least. And if you feel passionate about the topics you're discussing, please, at least try to keep those conversations of yours civil. Jono is in no mood to brave a battlefield today.

Yeul wasn't sure what she wanted to talk about. Did it count as wishing she could if she knew it wouldn't make any difference anyway? And was it fair to wish she could when she thought it would only upset the person she talked to more than it would upset her?

If it just upset someone else then she didn't want to talk about it.

She glanced around for a someone to talk to nonetheless and resolved that, unless they wanted to talk about something upsetting, she would keep things light.

"I have no idea what to talk about," Victor said, turning to Yeul. "Usually I don't have a problem, but tell me to talk about something important to me and my brain completely freezes up. Do you have anything?"

Yeul looked mildly apprehensive at the thought of coming up with something.

"My first few thoughts seem either unwise or hardly of interest to anyone but myself," she said honestly, smiling despite herself. "I suppose we could talk about hobbies? As that is generally something that’s important though I doubt it fulfills the requirement to talk about something that we wish we could talk about."

Victor looked relieved she hadn't suggested sharing their innermost feelings. Not that he had a hard time talking about his emotions, it just felt a little out of place in a class.

"Hobbies," he said easily. "Sure. I like listening to music, I like playing with computers -- well, any electronics, but especially computers -- and I like superhero stuff. You into any of that?"

"I like listening to music," she offered, "though right now I mostly just leave the radio on and let whatever station it's on play. I'm still getting used to the songs here, though the kinds of music aren't that different from home. What sort do you listen to? I'm afraid computers and I don't go beyond the basics of how to use one."

She tilted her head. "By superhero stuff do you mean the real sort of superheroes or the cartoon kind?" Yeul felt that needed elaboration so she added, "My world has only the second sort."

"I like rap and techno, but I'll listen to about anything," Victor answered, with a little shrug. "Mostly I like finding new stuff, I guess? I get bored hearing the same songs over and over again on the radio. Probably not a problem if you're in a totally new world."

He tilted his head to the side, thinking. "And I meant real superheroes, but the cartoon kind can be kind of fun to read about."

She shook her head, smiling. "I don't have that problem yet. I assume I might get tired of the same few songs in time but it's still pretty interesting to just hear anything and have it all be fresh and new to me."

"Is being a fan of a real superhero rather like being a fan of a particular actor or actress?" Yeul looked sheepish. "My apologies if that's a ridiculous question."

"Why would it be ridiculous?" Victor asked rhetorically. "And yeah, a lot like that. Or like rooting for a sports team. You hope they do a good job, but sometimes you're going to get let down."

Yeah, okay. Conversation.

Atton was going to sit over here and look real receptive to that. Honest.

... Mostly he looked like he was one more degree away from having his chair tip over and spilling him onto the ground.

Well, if that wasn't an invitation, Rapunzel didn't know what was! She she practically bounced over to Atton with a grin.

"Hi!" she chirped happily. "What do you want to talk about?"

Atton slanted a look at her. "Could you be any more cheerful?"

Rapunzel's lips purse, and her brow furrows slightly as she gives the question serious consideration.

"I... could try?" she eventually ventures, clearly unsure.

Well, he hadn't expected that. But hey.

"I'd like to see that."

For a moment Rapunzel just stood silently, catching her lower lip between her teeth as she tried to figure out a way to do that.

Oh! Inspiration!

All hesitance disappeared in a huge grin. "Do you like the beach?" she asked, eyes gleaming. Apparently beaches were really exciting to think about!

"This week? Yeah, I like the beach," Atton said.

Because thinking of it made him think back to the beach party.
