Umbridge High School Building, Saturday Evening

Jul 28, 2012 08:48

There were some clouds hanging around the spires of Umbridge High School, but not enough; there was an overlaying sense that there shouldn't be as much sunlight shining down on it as there was.

It was quiet. Kind of. There was tension in the air, a wound-up strung-up thing that ensnared the school. Somehow it seemed as if even the birds didn't ( Read more... )

The brain of Umbridge's empire - or at least the memory - was the library, stocked to the brim with books... and at this point, probably alerted loyalists.

Loyalists, gather up to guard your books.

Cassie was in the library, in a prime defensive spot, calling up the power within her. She would help protect this library and damned be the ones who tried to stop her.

In the ideal version of this assault, anyone working the library would be called down to assist with the detention raid. But this wasn't unexpected and it certainly wasn't a deterrent.

Through careful planning and determination, they had made it to the roof with short lengths of rope for their entrance. Because of course Bruce's plan involved a flashy entrance crashing through a window. Of course. He gave the signal to the team and swung down, making an entrance for anyone who didn't want to smash through glass themselves.

The assault had officially begun.

Well, this would mark the first time Ender had entered a building through the window.

He was a quick learner, though - after watching Bruce go for a few seconds, he swung in behind him through the glass. The landing was more familiar, and he hit the ground running.

They were in.

Cassie heard them breaking in and she came around the corner.

"Get out!" She said, power moving along her hands.

...and right at Ender, too.

He scrambled to hide behind one of the bookcases, rifling through his pockets in search of one of the syringes. If he managed to sneak around behind her, he could take her out, little violence necessary.

Stupid hope, his gut told him. He was normal and she wasn't; he'd have to even the odds somehow.

The bookcase right next to his exploded as lightning slammed into it. Cassie knew the books could be replaced, but the High Inquisitor would be pissed if the library was taken over by the blasted rebels.

... Yes, that wasn't going to work.

Ender began to move along the length of the bookcase. "Stop," he called. "Stop!"

If he could distract her...

"You're the one that's attacking us," Cassie pointed out. "You have no right being here."

She called up power and sent another shot of power towards Ender. This time it was a fireball.

"You have no right to occupy this island," Ender said. If she kept firing on the bookcase he might be able to wrench it loose...

He ducked underneath it and felt the heat scorching it on the other side.

"This is High Inquisitor Umbridge's island," Cassie pointed out. She moved to the side to hit a second bookcase, hoping to make it and him explode.

It blew out a good portion of the bookcase, but Ender had been fast, had seen it coming.

Now that there was a chunk of it divorced from the rest of the case, though, he had a shot. He rushed forward to push the still-heavy case on top of her.

Cassie yelled and dove to the side, throwing a blast of power at Ender as she rolled.

It might not have been completely on target as she had still been working on attacking while on the move before this happened.

No time to go for a syringe.

Ender threw himself towards him as the power went searing over his head. He snagged a piece of broken-off wood as he went and, hoping that her powers took a few seconds to kick back in, lashed out at her head with it.
