Detention, Depths of the Castle, Thursday

Jul 26, 2012 01:59

Another beautiful day had begun in Fandom, not that anyone in detention would have noticed. The lack of sunlight, the pleasant sound of Umbridge's voice, and the slightly stale smell of breakfast were all important aspects to making every day in detention routine! Surely everyone knew that surprises were no fun ( Read more... )

Assuming they're not already talking to themselves or something.

Dinah was not talking to herself, or singing. She was very quietly reciting Henry V, trying to remember all the speeches. A Midnight's Summer Dream would be next.

That's what she did on Thursdays. It was the routine. It kept her rational and occupied, and that was half the battle.

[Again, SP, although I should be on a bit earlier tonight.]

Jonothon spent his afternoon on his feet, and pacing, today. There was an... an itch in the back of his head, pieces of a puzzle slowly being fitted back into place and some of those pieces were bits of his own broken self.

He hadn't realized until the other day just how fragmented he'd let himself become over the years. But now, with Liara's help, he was scrounging around the edges of his self for pieces that he'd never allowed into the equation, and besides that low, seething anger that had been keeping him tethered in sanity, there was something else, too.

Oh... was that was confidence felt like?

"How are you doing?" Liara asked as she passed by Jono on one of her little rounds.

He was by far and away the easiest human to pick out. The fire made him stand out.

//Doing... better, I think,// Jonothon replied, with a glance Liara's way and a little nod. //Spending a little more time just... tidying up. There are subtle things, it isn't like flicking on a light and suddenly realizing that I'm in a different room entirely. But...//

He waved a hand, groping about for words.

//I'm more... in tune? In tune with myself.//

It probably helped that he'd gone a little gung-ho over the course of yesterday and today, digging at those frayed threads of his and making a place for the ones that he'd thrown aside in the past.

//And how're you, luv?//

"I am glad to hear it," Liara said, fidgeting around with her fingers again. It was good knowing her first time trying this in any genuine capacity hadn't been botched, but the experience had been exhausting and confusing.

She wasn't sure she'd be up for trying it again.

"I am all right," she said. "Better now that the singing has come and gone, as well as the... lingering embarrassment."

//Embarrassed over th'singing, luv?// Jono tilted his head a little bit, eyebrow raised slightly. //I don't know why. It's hardly as though your voice is th'sort that makes small children cry and birds drop out of th'sky.//

... That was a compliment, in Jono's way.

For once, she didn't take that literally. "Thank you," Liara said instead, "I have my biotics for that."

Was that a joke?

Might've been. Jono was definitely going to take it as such. He might not have had a mouth, but there was definitely a smile on his face, managing to reach the corners of his eyes.

//And if we ever get out of here, won't that be a sight to see?//

For what it was worth, he probably wouldn't ask her to knock birds from the sky, if they ever managed to escape.

"I would rather my time here did not involve much use of them," Liara admitted, "But I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel the inclination to towards our captors."

//I have to confess that I spent th'better part of the past three years telling myself just what I'd do to the people who put me here,// Jono agreed, his brow furrowing slightly. //If I ever do get th'chance, I haven't a clue if I'll take it, though. Tempting as it is to rearrange a few of their faces for them.//

If he got out of here, he could. That was the thing. He could level the whole bloody island, if he felt so inclined. Even with his affairs a little more in order than they'd been before, the prospect of stepping away from the power dampeners and into his own full capacity frightened him a little.

"I want to go home," Liara admitted. "My mother must miss me. But... if I ever leave here... I will have no regrets if I hurt them on my way out."

//Trust me, Sunshine, if they put up a fight,// and they will, //they won't know what hit them if th'lot of us get loose.//

They had a Hulk. That on its own made them virtually unstoppable.

//Home... That's th'place with the water? The one you showed me the other day?//

"Armali, Thessia," Liara said, nodding. She rubbed the back of her neck. "It is where I grew up."

//It's a beautiful place,// Jono offered, stuffing his hands into his pockets to keep from mimicking the gesture. Had he stepped into awkward conversation? He probably had. But... to hell with it. //I can definitely see why you'd want to go back there, especially after being stuck in this hole. Having a home like that t'go back to... if only most of us were so lucky.//

"I would prefer living somewhere quieter. My mother enjoys the crowds of Thessia, but... I got here because I was trying to start my career in archaeology early. I would spend most of my time out on desolate digs."

She hesitated briefly. "Is there something wrong with your home?"
