Valentine Wiggin sat on the desk at the front of the room, kicking her feet a little as she gave her small smattering of students a little smile. "Allow me to start class this week for apologizing for last week," she said. "I'd explain myself, but let's just say there were squirrels, teal deer, and Carly Rae Jepsen involved, and I don't believe anyone has the kind of stomach for that story today."
"Instead, we're going to turn our focus today on the idea of the story question. One approach to creative writing is to ask yourself a question and, with that story, answer it. What is the meaning of life? How does one fall in love? In the battle between good and evil, who will win? And, of course, what is that?"
The smile on her face was slightly apologetic. "That," Valentine explained, "is in reference to a song. Now, some of you may have never heard this song, but take a moment, and we'll watch
this video. I like the video because it sort of tells a story in its own right, though I'm sure we could all have a different interpretation on it. Today, I want you to think about the lyrics. Meatloaf claims that he would do anything for love. He'd run right back to hell and back, he'd hose her down with holy water if she got too hot, but he won't do that.
"So what the hell is that? It's truly one of the greatest mysteries in the world, and it's going to be a mystery we solve today. Take some time to discuss it with each other, decide what you think he wouldn't do for love, write up a story about it, and then we'll share. And I will profusely apologize for skipping class on you last week, but I will absolutely not apologize for earworming you all this morning."
She was just mean like that.
"Any questions?"
