"Glad to see you all survived Parent's Weekend," Cindy said. "Considering how stressful dealing with family and friends can be, I've decided to let you guys have an easy week this week."

You all know what that meant, right? Movie day! Complete with coffee, small bowls of buttery popcorn, and those fun little shakers of popcorn flavourings.

Cindy kind of adored this movie. When she didn't want to shoot it in the face, of course.

"Ms. Perrault?" Alex said as he approached Cindy after class. "I want to apologize for my dad." He didn't know what his dad had or hadn't done, but apologizing for him was never a bad guess.

"No reason to apologize, Alex," Cindy said, giving him an understanding smile. "Other than a lot of quality looming, your dad mostly wanted to check in on your progress and see what you were learning about."

She regarded him for a moment before adding, "He was also worried that you might have some issues with a bit of the syllabus."

Cindy didn't want to pry, but she wanted to give Alex the chance to talk about it--if he wanted to, that was.

"He's good at looming," Alex agreed, then looked confused. "Is this about Achilles? Because I'm not mad at him, and he's not mad at me, because it totally wasn't my fault about his face."

"In a few weeks, we'll be reading about the 47 Ronin," Cindy said, her eyes gentle but her voice business-like. She didn't know what happened, but she didn't want him to think she was pitying him for it. "Your father was concerned."

"...oh." So definitely not about Achilles, then. Excuse Alex if he looked a little bit like a puppy now. "Oh. Yeah. That was, um. That was a thing. I'd rather not talk about it? But it's fine."

He really did look like a puppy. Cindy kind of wanted to cuddle him. Hmm, you probably weren't supposed to cuddle students. Or tiny gods of fear.

"You don't have to," she assured him. "I'm not going to pry. But your father thought it might be enough of a thing to warrant mention. Should you get uncomfortable in class, you can leave and we'll figure out a makeup assignment later. Otherwise, as far as I'm concerned, this conversation is the last time we need to visit the subject, unless and until you decide otherwise. Sound fair?"

Huh. Those guys looked a bit too well-put-together to be actual soldiers.

Which wasn't going to stop Max from appreciating the scenery.
