Try Not to Die!!!! [Tuesday, July 19]

Jul 19, 2011 10:30

Anakin, despite not having lived on a desert in several decades--and having a wife who was from New England--was still a big baby very sensitive when it came to cold. And he'd learned that as long as you were warm, it didn't really matter how silly you looked.

Perhaps someone had just told him that based on the headgear he was currently sporting, ( Read more... )

Like you're even a little surprised Anakin will send you out in an Ice Age.

Detour: Build a Fire or Build a Weapon sith_happened July 19 2011, 14:39:14 UTC
Out here in the ice, both are essential to survival. In one, you must walk a greater distance (using the GPS) to find a place out of the wind to build a fire. For the other, you only have to walk far enough to find a suitable piece of wood and a stone, which could take a while...choose wisely.

Once you reach the area that is out of the wind, build up a pile of sticks (larger ones as well as kindling), and start a fire without matches.

When you're finished, go over to the modified mouse droid, which will give you your your next clue.

Bring some of the fire with you when you leave.

Start a fire without matches? Please. Until fairly recently, Firekeeper hadn't even known matches existed.

And, well. Her name was Firekeeper. Taking the flint and steel from the pouch around her neck, she got to work.

Blind Seer, of course, supervised the process.

Oh, Wesley knew all about starting a fire without matches. If anything, it was often essential on watchers' retreats. He used his glasses, focusing a lens on a small point, and a flame erupted.

A pang in his chest reminded him how much he associated fire with Katniss now, but he ignored it as he went to collect his next clue.

Find food! Using either the fire or the weapon you made, chase one of the conveniently nearby woolly mammoths or buffalo race off a cliff to its death.

...Yes, Anakin is insane.

Then make your way down the cliff to meet Anakin.

This would be so much easier in her coyote form. She briefly considered slipping into the trees and shifting, but wasn't sure if that would be considered cheating or not. And too many of the other students might see her. Or at least wonder where the heck some random coyote came from.

So, with a sigh, she set off at a run towards one of the buffalo. Basic hunting techniques worked just the same in human form, she just couldn't run quite as fast.

Afterwards she made her way down the cliff to go find the teacher.

The competitive part of Cara really wanted to go after one of the big woolly things, but the part of her that was aware she didn't really have any ranged weapons decided one of the big, grumpy-looking cows would be a better bet.

Besides the adult ones were as tall as a Shadrin and easily twice as heavy, so it wasn't like they wouldn't be a challenge. Of course thanks to someone's lectures on proper hunting techniques, she wouldn't be going after an adult unless she could find one that looked lame.

Hunting? Also something Firekeeper was pretty damned good at. Fire in one hand and Fang in another, she worked with Blind Seer to herd one of the mammoths to the spot she wanted it.

She may have spent some time contemplating how to get down there later to retrieve the carcass.

What? Anything else would be wasteful.

Ask Tahiri or Anakin for help! sith_happened July 19 2011, 15:07:32 UTC
Mostly in the "help, I can't make my GPS work!" vein.

Tahiri was equally bundled up and trying not to look too miserable, and hoping she wouldn't have to, you know, venture out and rescue someone from anything remotely Wampa Ice Creature-ish.

It hadn't been that many years for her since leaving the desert.

Mercy made her way over - far less out of breath than she had any right to be. "Done, sir."

"You're fourth today," Anakin informed her with a smile. "Head back across the causeway and warm up."

Mercy looked back wistfully at the snow covered landscape and wondered if she dared shift and go for a good run there later. It did make her feel a bit homesick.

She turned her attention back to Anakin, wistful smile still there, and nodded. "Thanks. Stay warm."
